Shoot!’s League One Awards (March)

For a while it looked as though Scunthorpe United were a shoe-in for promotion, but an awful run of form throughout February and early March has allowed Sheffield United to move clear at the top and opened the door for Bolton Wanderers and Fleetwood Town to fight it out for the other automatic promotion spot.

Southend United’s form has seen them move into a strong position, but both Millwall and Rochdale are hot on the heels of the top seven and have games in hand to boot.

Coventry City have finally won back-to-back games under the guidance of Mark Robins, but it appears to be only a matter of time before them and Chesterfield suffer inevitable relegation.

Swindon Town also look likely to drop into the fourth-tier, but both Port Vale and Shrewsbury Town are within touching distance of the teams above them as the business end of the season approaches.

Following March’s proceedings, here is Shoot!’s League One Player, Manager and Goal of the Month…

Player of the Month: Filipe Morais (Bolton Wanderers)

Filipe Morais joined Bolton from League One rivals Bradford in February.

As Bolton continued their march to the Championship throughout March, the performances of Filipe Morais have really stood out.

He only signed for Wanderers in February, but has provided more league assists this calendar year than any other player in England’s top four divisions.

Four of those came in the 4-0 win at Gillingham, but Morais has also scored a few as well, notably the winner against Northampton Town and the opening goal in the win against Oxford United.

It’s been a remarkable month for both the 31-year-old winger and his Bolton side, and in their current form, both can be very confident of a promotion come what May.

Manager of the Month: Phil Parkinson (Bolton Wanderers)

Seizing the initiative from Scunthorpe’s poor run has been Parkinson and his Bolton Wanderers outfit who, in March, went six games unbeaten and won five fixtures in a row.

They’ve been good to watch as well, putting four goals past Fleetwood, Gillingham and Oxford as they’ve tightened their grip on a promotion spot.

It’s not inconceivable that they could win the division as they ended March closing in on leaders Sheffield United.

Goal of the Month: Kyel Reid (COVENTRY CITY v Port Vale)

Reid (Right).

Despite The Sky Blues sitting rock-bottom in League One, back-to-back wins at the end of March has given Coventry fans a glimmer of hope that their team can pull off ‘The Great Escape’.

One shining example of this came at the Ricoh Arena, where winger Kyel Reid opened the scoring against Port Vale in their 2-1 victory with a spectacular strike from 25 yards out.
