Shoot!’s League Two Awards (February)

League Two promotion hopefuls Doncaster Rovers and Plymouth Argyle have both experienced a somewhat indifferent February which has opened the door for the chasing pack.

Darren Ferguson’s Rovers are still in a good position but Argyle will be getting nervous following their capitulation last season and the fact they lost at home to strugglers Notts County and Leyton Orient.

The division has become tighter at the top with Stevenage, Exeter City, Luton Town and in particular Portsmouth sensing the chance of stealing an automatic promotion place.

In the race for the play-off places, the likes of Mansfield Town and Colchester United enter March ready to pounce if any of the top seven slip up, while clubs such as Grimsby Town, Wycombe Wanderers, and Cambridge United will still harbour play-off ambitions between now and May.

At the bottom, things look very bleak for Leyton Orient, both on and more worryingly off the pitch, while Graham Westley has struggled to make an impact since taking over at bottom club Newport County, who enter March nine points adrift of safety and in desperate need of victories over the coming weeks.

So, in what was an exciting month in English football’s fourth tier, here are Shoot!’s League Two Player, Manager and Goal of the Month awards for February…

Player of the Month: Matt Godden (Stevenage)

Six games, six goals.

Impressive form for a striker in anyone’s book, and Matt Godden is red hot at the moment.

He’s deadly from twelve yards, having scored three penalties in February, but is also lethal from anywhere in the box.

His dramatic winner in the fifth minute of injury time at Crawley set Stevenage up on a run that saw them drop just two points in the aforementioned six games, and Godden has played his part in each and every one of them

Manager of the Month: Darren Sarll (Stevenage)

Unbeaten in February, Darren Sarll has taken Stevenage from seeming mid-table mediocrity to play-off contenders with five wins and a draw in six games.

The only game they didn’t win was against in-form Exeter City, but Boro have still closed the gap on the Grecians, ending the month in seventh place.

With fourteen goals scored, Sarll’s men have made the most of a busy schedule, and may well even fancy their chances of going up automatically.

Goal of the Month: Gavin Massey (Plymouth Argyle v LEYTON ORIENT)

Leyton Orient picked up a massive three points away at Plymouth Argyle on February 14 by beating the Pilgrims 3-2 at Home Park.

And they had Gavin Massey to thank for a moment of individual brilliance to bring them level just before half-time.

The 24-year-old set off down the left-hand-side and continued motoring towards goal, before cutting inside and firing an excellent effort into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Luke McCormick.

It was a stunning effort that set Orient on their way to three vital points.
