Shoot!’s League Two Awards (March)

Plymouth Argyle’s victory over Doncaster Rovers has opened up the battle for the League Two title, but both sides look to be close to guaranteeing promotion to League One.

Portsmouth’s form also means they are likely to join them, while anyone in the top half could still make the play-offs.

Newport County have closed the gap slightly on Cheltenham Town at the bottom of the standings, while Hartlepool United will also be nervous.

Everyone from Notts County in 16th an up can breathe a little easier knowing the league football is all but assured now.

However, following March’s proceedings, here is Shoot!‘s League Two Player, Manager and Goal of the Month awards…

Player of the Month: John Marquis (Doncaster Rovers)

As Doncaster close in on promotion, and with it a probable League Two title, their leading goalscorer John Marquis continues to propel them towards League One.

A brace against struggling Leyton Orient and a goal against Cheltenham Town has ensured Rovers’ promotion push hasn’t stuttered with three wins and a draw from five games in March.

Marquis will certainly be a contender for both the Doncaster and League Two Player of the Season awards and many League Two defences will be glad to see the back of him.

Manager of the Month: Gary Bowyer (Blackpool)

It’s perhaps a testament to just how good Gary Bowyer’s Blackpool side has been recently that they may be slightly disappointed to ‘only’ pick up sixteen points from a possible eighteen in March.

Their only dropped points were in a 0-0 draw away at Wycombe Wanderers, and even that was only due to two remarkable saves from Wanderers goalkeeper Jamal Blackman – the second an 86th minute penalty save.

Bowyer won’t be too worried though, as victories over high-flying Plymouth and in-form Stevenage had propelled The Seasiders from mid-table into the play-off spots.

It’s probably a little too late for them to make the top three, but on current form, a place in the end of season lottery looks more than likely.

Goal of the Month: Graham Carey (PLYMOUTH ARGYLE v Morecambe)

One key player behind Plymouth’s League Two title bid this campaign has been attacking midfielder Graham Carey, who has been in stupendous form all season.

The 27-year-old has scored 13 goals in all competitions for The Pilgrims so far this season, including the only goal of the game during the hosts’ 1-0 victory over Morecambe on March 18.

Carey calmly controlled Matthew Kennedy’s lay-off, before unleashing an unstoppable left-footed curling effort into the far top corner to leave goalkeeper Barry Roche absolutely speechless.
