On Super Sunday, this weekend’s Premier League action concludes at Anfield, as unbeaten league leaders Manchester City visit Liverpool (16:00).

The Reds, who agreed to sell midfielder Philippe Coutinho to La Liga leaders FC Barcelona for an astonishing £142m earlier this week, are looking to seal their fourth successive league victory on the spin after defeating Swansea City, Leicester City and Burnley recently.

Meanwhile the Citizens, who have won 20 of their opening 22 league games so far this season, will be determined to preserve their unbeaten streak this term, having suffered a slight scare against Crystal Palace (0-0) on New Year’s Eve.

The last time these two sides went head-to-head, City thrashed Liverpool 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium back in September 2017, with Gabriel Jesus (below) and Leroy Sane scoring a brace each.

Goalkeeper: Ederson (Manchester City)

Picked ahead of Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius is City’s Ederson, who has starred for his new side following his £35m summer switch from Benfica.

The 24-year-old has kept 11 clean sheets in his 22 league appearances this season – only Manchester United’s David De Gea (12) has recorded more.

Right-back: Kyle Walker (Manchester City)

Another summer signing that has shone at the Etihad Stadium, City’s £50m full-back Kyle Walker.

The 27-year-old has provided five assists in 29 appearances in all competitions for Guardiola’s men so far this campaign, with his pace providing a frightening attacking aspect to his game.

Centre-back: Nicolas Otamendi (Manchester City)

A player that has developed terrifically since Guardiola’s arrival at City, is Nicolas Otamendi.

The Argentine has arguably been the club’s best defender this season, even scoring five goals in 27 games.

Having arrived from Valencia back in August 2015 for £28.5m, his initial inconsistency fuelled doubts over his long-term future at the Etihad, but he has come on leaps and bounds this term, establishing a formidable partnership with fellow centre-half John Stones.

Centre-back: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

Liverpool’s first player in our Select XI is new club-record signing, Virgil van Dijk.

The 26-year-old cost The Reds a whopping £75m from Southampton earlier this month – a world record transfer fee for a defender – having scored seven goals in 80 games for The Saints.

Left-back: Benjamin Mendy (Manchester City)

Despite being on the sidelines with ligament damage, left-back Benjamin Mendy impressed enough in his opening four Premier League outings to nudge Liverpool’s Andy Robertson out of our Select XI.

The 23-year-old is not expected to return until around April after undergoing surgery, having moved to City from AS Monaco for around £52m in the summer.

Midfielder: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

Into the midfield, and the first name on the teamsheet is City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

The 26-year-old has scored eight goals and provided 12 assists in 30 appearances in all competitions this campaign – an instrumental player behind City’s unbeaten Premier League record.

Midfielder: David Silva (Manchester City)

Another key man behind City’s domestic dominance this term is David Silva.

The Spaniard, 32, has netted five goals and registered 11 assists in 24 games this season.

Midfielder: Adam Lallana (Liverpool)

Despite recently only returning to first-team action following a hamstring injury, Liverpool’s Adam Lallana completes our midfield line up in our Select XI.

The 29-year-old made his first Premier League start against Burnley last time out and should be a welcome boost to manager Jurgen Klopp for the remainder of the campaign, especially following the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona this month.

Right forward: Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)

Moving on to our front three, and on the right flank is ex-Liverpool star Raheem Sterling.

The 23-year-old City winger has scored 18 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions this term, enjoying the most prolific campaign of his career under boss Guardiola.

Centre forward: Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)

Spearheading the attack is City’s all-time top goalscorer Sergio Aguero.

The 29-year-old has hit the back of the net 13 times in 17 Premier League games this season, and will be even more important to City’s title surge now that strike partner Gabriel Jesus has been ruled out with knee ligament damage.

Left forward: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

And finally, on the left flank, completing our Liverpool-Manchester City Select XI is the Premier League’s signing of the summer, Mohamed Salah.

Following his club-record transfer from AS Roma back in June 2017, the Egyptian magician has scored a remarkable 23 goals in 29 games overall for The Reds, chipping in with eight assists as well.
