Shoot!’s Premier League Awards (February)

The big news in the Premier League during the month of February was the sacking of the reigning champions’ manager for the second season running as Claudio Ranieri parted ways with Leicester.

It had a good short-term effect though as the Foxes scored their first Premier League goals of the year in a 3-1 success over Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on February 27, in turn ending a run of five straight league losses, and giving interim boss Craig Shakespeare a genuine chance of securing the job permanently.

Premier League leaders Chelsea showed little signs of letting up in their bid to grab Leicester’s title, while the race for the top four is still open, with sixth place Manchester United just two points behind fourth place Arsenal heading into March, and only five behind Tottenham in second.

Swansea’s revival coupled with Middlesbrough’s plight sees the latter in real danger at the other end, while Hull and Crystal Palace join Sunderland in the bottom three ahead of a pivotal March.

In what was a frantic month, here are the Shoot!’s Premier League Manager, Player, and Goal of the month awards for February…

Player of the Month: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

He’s one of their own and if ever the White Hart Lane faithful were grateful of that it was in February.

The winner against Middlesbrough and a first half hat-trick against Stoke saw Spurs pick up six points from nine during the month, which means that they entered March in second place in the Premier League table.

Spurs showed faith in Kane with a contract that keeps him at the club until 2022, which is bad news for the rest of the Premier League as he continues to prove his worth.

Manager of the Month: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City)

If anyone is going to catch Chelsea come the end of the month, it looked like it could only be Pep Guardiola’s men.

Having won all their Premier League games in February, they’re closing in on a Champions League spot and if they can win their game in hand, they will move to second in the table.

Questions may still be asked about Guardiola’s qualities as a manager given some of City’s results overall, but in a competitive league, he appears to be holding his own.

Goal of the Month: Robbie Brady (BURNLEY v Chelsea)

Premier League leaders Chelsea knew that victory against Burnley at Turf Moor on February 12 would have taken them 12 points clear at the top of the table, and Pedro’s seventh minute opener set them on their way to doing just that.

However, a moment of brilliance from Republic of Ireland international Robbie Brady secured Sean Dyche’s men a deserved point from the game, with his excellent free-kick beating the full-stretched Thibaut Courtois in the Chelsea goal.

Take a bow Robbie!
