Shoot!’s ultimate Everton-Leicester City five-a-side team

Ronald Koeman’s Everton host Premier League champions Leicester City on Sunday (1.30pm kick-off) hoping to get back to winning ways.

The Toffees lost 3-1 to Merseyside rivals Liverpool last weekend before drawing 1-1 at Manchester United in midweek, results which have all but ended their slim hopes of achieving a top place come the end of the season.

However, they are just three points behind Arsenal in fifth so a Europa League spot is not out of the question, although they could really do with getting three points against the Foxes on Sunday.

Yet the champions have been resurgent under new manager Craig Shakespeare since he replaced the sacked Claudio Ranieri back in February, winning all five of their Premier League games, as well as reaching the last eight of the Champions League with victory over Sevilla.

Victory at Goodison Park would all but seal their Premier League status for another season, so there’s plenty to play for between the two sides on Sunday.

So, with the build-up well underway ahead of Sunday’s clash, we at Shoot! have selected our ultimate Everton-Leicester five-a-side team from those players available for selection at Goodison Park…

Kasper Schmeichel

Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel has been one of a handful of Foxes who can say that they have played at a high level throughout the current campaign.

The Denmark international has been sensational for Craig Shakespeare’s side this season, building on his efforts last time out which helped the Midlands club win the title, with several excellent displays helping the Foxes to key draws and victories this season.

He made numerous great saves against Sevilla in the Champions League last month, and one of their most recent Premier League successes saw him somehow keep out Andy Carroll’s late strike against West Ham.

Schmeichel is a quality shot-stopper, and one who is easily better than any of Everton’s current options.

Leighton Baines

Everton’s Ashley Williams would likely get the nod in this team, but he is suspended for the clash with the Foxes on Sunday so cannot be selected.

And with Seamus Coleman injured and several Leicester defenders not at the same level as last season, it means that Leighton Baines earns a place in this team.

The England international has started 25 of their 31 Premier League games this term and performed well in both the natural left-back role and a wing-back position, netting twice and laying on two assists.

His experience at this level will seriously help the Toffees over the coming months, what with Coleman and Ramiro Funes Mori injured for the season and the likelihood of youngsters playing more often, so keeping him fit and fresh will be important for Koeman between now and May.

Idrissa Gueye

Energy, work-rate, endeavour – those traits are absolutely vital in any successful five-a-side, and they are all traits Everton’s Idrissa Gueye possesses.

The Senegalese international was second only to N’Golo Kante in terms of tackles and interceptions in the Premier League last season, while Kante was on the books at Sunday’s opponents, yet Gueye has turned the tables this time round.

The 27-year-old leads the tackles made column with 115 to Kante’s 101, while the Everton man is just one behind the Chelsea midfielder in terms of interceptions (64 to 63).

Nonetheless, Gueye has all the attributes to be a huge asset in any five-a-side team, and although Wilfred Ndidi has been excellent for Leicester since his move in January, Gueye deserves his place in this team.

Riyad Mahrez

The PFA Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez has been far from his best this time round, yet he has proven to have the talent and quality to turn a game in an instance.

The Algeria international scored 17 goals and laid on 11 assists to help the Foxes achieve the remarkable and win the Premier League title, although this season has managed just five goals in 27 league games.

However, improved displays in recent weeks under Craig Shakespeare, including a man-of-the-match performance against Hull last month, suggests that Mahrez is slowly coming back to top form, and when he is in form like that, there aren’t many better attackers in the division.

Everton have several good attacking players, like Kevin Mirallas and Ross Barkley, yet neither of them trump Mahrez when he is at his best, which is why he gets into this team.

Jamie Vardy

Deciding between the Premier League’s top-scorer Romelu Lukaku and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy is far from easy, but it terms of a better five-a-side player, you’d probably have to plump with the latter.

England international Vardy has seen a resurgent in form in recent weeks which was kick-started by a fine brace against Liverpool back in February, since then, he has added three goals and two assists in five games, as well as netting for England in their 2-0 success over Lithuania last month.

His energy, work-rate, and overall tenacity would be perfect for a five-a-side team, and although Lukaku is undoubtedly a better striker than Vardy (he’s top-scorer in the league), he probably wouldn’t work as well in this side.

Thus, Vardy just gets the nod.
