Shoot!’s ultimate Everton-West Brom six-a-side team

It’s seventh versus eighth in the Premier League on Saturday as Ronald Koeman’s Everton host Tony Pulis’ West Brom at Goodison Park (3pm kick-off).

The Toffees are just five points behind sixth place Manchester United having won six of their last ten league games, although they saw their unbeaten run come to an end last weekend as they went down 3-2 away at Tottenham.

Nonetheless, Koeman’s men have been much-improved in 2017 and will still harbour ambitions of finishing in the top six, which could be enough for a Europa League place, although they’ll have to get past the Baggies on Saturday in their quest to do just that.

Pulis’ side are just four points adrift of Everton having won 11 of their 27 Premier League matches, although they also suffered defeat in their last outing, losing 2-0 at home to relegation-threatened Crystal Palace.

Everton won the reverse fixture 2-1 back in August, with goals from Kevin Mirallas and Gareth Barry cancelling out Gareth McAuley’s opener for West Brom, and it’s likely to be another game of fine margins between two good teams on Saturday.

With just a place and four points separating the two sides, it’s sure to be a fascinating encounter at Goodison Park, and with the build-up well underway, we at Shoot! have selected our ultimate Everton-West Brom six-a-side team from the current squads…

Ben Foster

After the season Ben Foster has had so far, it’s difficult to leave him out in favour of Joel Robles or Maarten Stekelenburg.

The former England international has started all 27 of the Baggies’ Premier League games this term, conceding just 34 goals and keeping five clean sheets.

His displays in between the sticks against both Arsenal and Tottenham were particular highlights of an excellent shot-stopper who has great command of his box, and one who can be relied upon to make crucial saves and crucial times.

Foster gets the nod in this side.

Ashley Williams

Both sides have been solid defensively in recent weeks, but there’s little doubting that Ashley Williams is the best defender at the two clubs.

The Welsh captain made the move from Swansea City last summer, and given how much the Swans have struggled at the back this term (they are the highest conceders in the league with 59), it’s clear how integral he was to their shape and organisation.

And he’s proven his capabilities with improving performances at Everton.

Williams may not have made a great start to life at Goodison Park, but as the season has progressed, he has become more solid and dependable, and is now looking like the defender that helped Swansea get into and indeed stay in the Premier League.

His quick-thinking, ability to anticipate play, and good range of passing would be invaluable in this team.

Seamus Coleman

If you’re looking for a player who has a relentless work-ethic and incredible energy to get up and down the pitch repeatedly, look no further than Everton’s Seamus Coleman.

The Republic of Ireland international has been a stalwart in the Toffees backline for several years now, and this term he has seamlessly adapted to the wing-back role at times implemented by Koeman.

And it appears to have brought the best out of Coleman, who has scored four times and laid on three assists in 24 Premier League appearances this term, of which four of those contributions have come in his last seven games.

His energy, tenacity, and overall ability to affect play at both ends of the pitch makes him a shoe-in in this team.

Idrissa Gueye

Idrissa Gueye was second only to N’Golo Kante in terms of tackles made in last season’s Premier League, but he’s turned the tables this time round.

The Senegalese international moved to Everton from relegated Aston Villa last summer, and has made quite the impression on the Goodison Park faithful thanks to his midfield tenacity and brilliant ability to break up play and keep things simple.

This term, Gueye has made 101 tackles in his 22 Premier League starts, which is seven more than Chelsea’s Kante, who has incidentally played four more times than the 27-year-old, and 19 more than Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson in third.

Gueye’s incredible energy and work-rate would be crucial in this six-a-side team.

Nacer Chadli

In every team, you need players who can change games in an instant and have the ability to produce something special.

And there’s no doubt that West Brom’s Nacer Chadli is one of those players, hence the Baggies spent a club record £13 million on him last summer.

The Belgian international has scored once and laid on two assists in his last four Premier League appearances, which has taken his tally to five goals and four assists for the campaign.

The way he performed in both games against West Ham this term, as well as against former club Tottenham, was demonstrative of Chadli’s capabilities in the final third, be it using his pace to get in behind or his composure in front of goal.

While Everton have several good forward options, Chadli just gets the nod in this side.

Romelu Lukaku

There aren’t many better strikers in the Premier League than Everton’s Romelu Lukaku at the minute.

The Belgian international scored his 18th goal of the campaign in their 3-2 defeat at Tottenham last weekend, meaning that he is just one behind Spurs’ Harry Kane in the race for the Premier League’s Golden Boot.

Sunday’s strike took his tally to nine goals in all competitions in 2017, and it’s clear that he has all the hallmarks of becoming one of Europe’s best forwards.

Lukaku has excellent pace and incredible strength, which themselves poses great threats to opposition defences, but he also reads the game well, can pick a pass, and makes intelligent runs.

He’s a nightmare to defend against, and a player who undoubtedly makes this team.
