Shoot!’s ultimate Leicester-Tottenham five-a-side team

Second place Tottenham travel to 2016 Premier League champions Leicester on Thursday (7.45pm kick-off) as the league campaign nears its conclusion.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men conceded the title to Antonio Conte’s Chelsea last weekend after the Blues got the better of West Brom 1-0 at the Hawthorns, which put them ten points clear of Spurs with just nine points left for the North London side to play for.

However, Pochettino’s men secured second and in turn their best-ever Premier League finish with a fine 2-1 win over Manchester United on Sunday, their final ever game at White Hart Lane, and they’ll be confident of getting another three points at the King Power Stadium on Thursday.

Yet, Craig Shakespeare’s side have been in great form since the 53-year-old replaced the sacked Claudio Ranieri back in February, winning seven of their 11 league games to move them clear of the bottom three, and indeed beating Sevilla in the last 16 of the Champions League to progress to the quarter-finals.

And with five wins from all five of his home Premier League games so far, Thursday is sure to be a fascinating encounter at the King Power Stadium.

So, with the build-up well underway ahead of Thursday’s clash, we at Shoot! have selected our ultimate Leicester-Tottenham five-a-side team based on those players available for selection at the King Power Stadium…

Kasper Schmeichel

Choosing between Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris and Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel is far from easy, but when you consider which one has gained their team more points over the last few seasons, the Foxes shot-stopper just gets the nod.

The 30-year-old was an integral part of the side that won the Premier League title last term, keeping 15 clean sheets and conceding just 36 goals, and it’s arguable that his contributions this season have been even more important to the Foxes in their battle to beat the drop.

Schmeichel has regularly been one of their star performers this term in a season where several Leicester players have seen their level drop, yet his stunning displays earlier in the campaign, in the Champions League, and in recent clashes against West Ham and Watford demonstrate what a quality keeper he is.

Obviously, Lloris is a supremely talented goalkeeper and one of the best in the division, but based on this term and what he did last season, Schmeichel just gets the nod in our team.

Jan Vertonghen

Injuries to Danny Rose and Kyle Walker means that Spurs are slightly lightweight in terms of full-back options, but they are in the fortunate position that centre-back Jan Vertonghen is just as good at left-back as he is at centre-half.

The Belgium international has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League since moving to Tottenham in 2012, and has struck up an impenetrable partnership with compatriot Toby Alderweireld at the heart of Pochettino’s backline.

However, Vertonghen is also an excellent full-back, and his defensive instincts, strength on and off the ball, and fine eye for a pass gives the 30-year-old the nod in this team.

Mousa Dembele

As central midfielders go, there aren’t many better in the Premier League than Spurs’ Mousa Dembele.

The 29-year-old has been at White Hart Lane since a £15 million move from Fulham back in 2012, and has been criminally underrated for the vast majority of his time in North London, although does appear to finally be getting the recognition he deserves for several impressive displays in the midfield.

The Belgium international can do pretty much everything you want from a central midfielder at the top level, and although Leicester’s Wilfried Ndidi has made a fine start to life in England, he doesn’t dispose Dembele from this team.

Dele Alli

This time last year, Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez would be a shoe-in for almost any five-a-side team, but the Algerian has embarked on a below-par season at the King Power Stadium this time round.

Whereas Tottenham’s Dele Alli continues to go from strength-to-strength, and is now regarded as one of the best attackers in the Premier League.

The 20-year-old has already beaten his goal-scoring tally from last term by bagging 17 goals for Pochettino’s men to help them to a best-ever Premier League finish of second.

The England star is rapidly developing into a top-quality player for both club and country, and thus comfortably makes this team.

Harry Kane

Like Mahrez, Leicester striker Jamie Vardy would have been in many five-a-side teams this time last year, yet you simply have to select Tottenham’s Harry Kane this time round.

The England international has broken the 20-goal barrier for the third successive season after another remarkable campaign in front of goal, bagging 22 in just 28 league appearances to sit behind just Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in the race for the Golden Boot.

The 23-year-old has been tipped in some quarters to get close to Alan Shearer’s all time goal-scoring record in the Premier League (at 23 Kane has 71 goals, Shearer finished on 260), which goes some way to demonstrating how good Kane is now, and how good he could become.

Ultimately, he easily makes it into our team.
