Shoot!’s ultimate Manchester United-Arsenal combined XI

Manchester United and Arsenal face off in the first Premier League match after the international break at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Jose Mourinho’s United are really in need of a win against Arsene Wenger’s side, given that they’ve won just five of their opening 11 league matches, and already trail the Gunners by six points in the table.

Defeats against Manchester City and Chelsea have questioned United’s title credentials, but victory over an in-form Arsenal side could reignite a title challenge from Mourinho’s side.

However, they’ll have to go some to beat a Gunners side that haven’t lost in any competition since the opening weekend of the season, and since then have won 12 of their 16 games, drawing the other four.

Wenger’s men are already into the last 16 of the Champions League with two games to spare, and know that they will not get a much better chance to end a ten-year wait for a league victory at Old Trafford than on Saturday.

With the build-up very much under way, many fans are speculating about could start for either side on Saturday, but we at Shoot! have decided to pick a combined eleven from the two current squads.

Thus, here are the ELEVEN players that make up our combined Man United and Arsenal team…

GK – David de Gea

In Petr Cech and David De Gea, Arsenal and Manchester United possess two of the best goalkeepers in the league, but it’s the Red Devils shot-stopper that gets the nod this time around.

The Spanish international, who has dethroned Iker Casillas the national team’s number one, has been integral to United in recent seasons, and has for three years in a row been named their Player of the Season.

Cech has done well since arriving at Arsenal, but if you had to add up the amount of points both keepers have won for their sides in the last two or three years, De Gea would pip him, which is why he’s in this team.

RB – Hector Bellerin

Hector Bellerin has rapidly developed into an excellent right-back, and could go on to become one of the best in the world in the next few years.

His marauding runs down the right give Arsenal pace and width, but the 21-year-old has also improved greatly defensively, and is a dependable part of an improving Arsenal defence.

Bellerin comfortably trumps United’s Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian, and is well worth his place in this side.

CB – Eric Bailly

Ivorian Eric Bailly has impressed many since his arrival as a relative unknown from Villarreal in the summer.

The 23-year-old has slotted effortlessly into a shaky United backline, and they will seriously miss his presence on Saturday given that he is out for a few months due to injury.

As much as Shkodran Mustafi has also impressed since his summer move, he walked into a decent Arsenal defence and made them better, whereas Bailly has walked into a struggling and injury-ridden backline and performed admirably. That’s why he gets the nod.

CB – Laurent Koscielny

It’s difficult to leave out French international defender Laurent Koscielny of this side.

Although the 31-year-old took time to adapt to the English game following his arrival in 2010, he has developed into a quality centre-back, who has on several occasions thwarted almost certain opposition goals.

Although he is still prone to the odd error, he’s the best centre-back of any on the books of both clubs, and rightly deserves his place in the heart of this defence.

LB – Luke Shaw

Arguably the weakest area in both squads, Luke Shaw just about gets the nod over the dependable Nacho Monreal because of what we’ve seen from him in the past, and the undoubted potential he possesses.

The England international may not be fancied by manager Jose Mourinho, for one reason or another, but in his short time at United when injury-free, he has performed in a similar way to what earned him the move from Southampton in 2014.

Monreal has done well this season but looked a bit off the pace prior to the international break, so Shaw just gets the nod.

CDM – Santi Cazorla

One of the most technically gifted players in the Premier League, Santi Cazorla has added so much to Arsenal since moving to the Emirates in 2012.

His tally of 25 goals and 35 assists in the league in the last four years is as good as anyone in his position, but it’s also the measure of control he brings to the team which helps Arsenal both offensively and defensively.

Cazorla can pass the ball better than the other midfield options, and the Gunners will miss his presence at Old Trafford on Saturday.

CDM – Paul Pogba

Although he hasn’t hit the expected heights since his £89 million move from Juventus in the summer, there have been signs that Paul Pogba is beginning to adapt to the English game.

The French international scored a stunning goal in United’s win over Swansea a fortnight ago, and netted for his country in their victory over Sweden last week.

Ander Herrera, Granit Xhaka, and Francis Coquelin all had genuine shouts of getting into this team at the expense of the 23-year-old, but it’s difficult to leave out the world’s most expensive player.

RW – Theo Walcott

Theo Walcott’s excellent form and renewed confidence sees him beat the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to the starting eleven.

Although he hasn’t produced his best for England this season, he has been brilliant for Arsenal, having netted eight goals already this time around, which is just one fewer than last season.

When Walcott is confident, he takes defenders on and also shows composure in front of goal – that’s when he is at his best, and that’s when he can be lethal in the final third.

CAM – Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil is a player that Mourinho clearly respects from their time together at Real Madrid, and he’d get into any Premier League team at this present time.

The German international has been in sensational form this season for the Gunners, having netted seven goals in 14 appearances so far, which is just one less than what he scored last season.

With Alexis Sanchez playing further forward, it has allowed Ozil the chance to dictate play from the middle, especially as he has willing runners in Walcott and Alex Iwobi either side, and an agile Sanchez to aim for upfront.

Ozil is as good as anyone in the league at the moment, and he’d certainly occupy the number ten spot in this combined team.

LW – Alexis Sanchez

Chilean international Alexis Sanchez has been in superb form for Arsenal this season playing in the more advanced role in the side.

The 27-year-old has netted eight times in 15 games for the Gunners thus far, and has also laid on five assists for his teammates.

Two more goals in the week for Chile underlines his unwavering confidence and enjoyment on the field and, although he isn’t playing upfront in this side, he’s better than all of United’s options on the wing.

ST – Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has proven to be a better striker than Olivier Giroud, if not in the Premier League then in other leagues in Europe, and that’s why he gets the nod ahead of the Frenchman.

The Swedish international has won the league title with every club he has been at except Malmo, and started this season brilliantly by netting five times in his first five games.

Although he had a barren spell in front of goal prior to his brace against Swansea, the 35-year-old kept creating chances and putting himself into positions to score, but he also worked well for the team even when things weren’t going great individually.

Ibrahimovic is a quality striker, and deservedly starts up top in this side.
