Shoot!’s ultimate Manchester United-Everton five-a-side team

Manchester United host Everton on Tuesday night (8pm kick-off) at Old Trafford as both sides look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League after disappointing weekends.

Jose Mourinho’s men were unable to break down West Brom on Saturday, in turn securing their eighth home draw of the campaign, and remaining five points off the top four following Manchester City’s 2-2 draw at Arsenal.

It means that the Red Devils have now drawn more games than any other side in the top-flight this season (11), and have drawn more home league matches than they have won (they have picked up just six wins).

And they’ll have to find their clinical edge on Tuesday as Ronald Koeman brings his wounded Everton to Manchester following their 3-1 defeat to Merseyside rivals Liverpool on Saturday.

The Toffees were comfortably second-best at Anfield on an afternoon which saw their top four hopes all but end, but they know that victory at Old Trafford on Tuesday would see them go above United into fifth place in the Premier League.

So, with the build-up well underway ahead of Tuesday’s crucial clash, we at Shoot! have selected our ultimate United-Everton five-a-side team from those players available for selection on Tuesday night…

David de Gea

Joel Robles has done reasonably well for Everton in recent months, yet his strange piece of goalkeeping for Divock Origi’s goal against Liverpool on Saturday somewhat highlighted his limitations as a shot-stopper.

Regardless, he is not as good as Manchester United’s David de Gea, who picked up his 11th clean sheet of the season on Saturday in their frustrating 0-0 draw at home to West Ham.

The Spanish international has been one of the best keepers in world football over the past few seasons, and is the three-times winner of the United Player of the Year award, demonstrating how integral he has been to them over recent seasons.

Robles is a good goalkeeper, but de Gea is a great one, and thus comfortably makes this team ahead of his compatriot.

Antonio Valencia

Everton’s Seamus Coleman would probably have made this team, but his horrific injury he suffered on international duty last week looks set to rule him out for at least six months, and everyone here at Shoot! would like to wish the 28-year-old a speedy recovery.

However, it means that United’s Antonio Valencia gets the nod, as his pace and power has seen him become one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders in the past few years.

The Ecuadorian international joined the Red Devils as a winger back in 2009, but has slowly moved further back down the pitch, and is now a hugely accomplished right-back and one United can rely on to perform well.

The defensive side of his game has improved massively over the last 12 months, which is why, alongside his physical strength and reading of the game, he gets a place in this side.

Idrissa Gueye

Every five-a-side team needs pace, energy, and an unquenchable thirst to work for the team in the middle of the park, which is everything Everton’s Idrissa Gueye is as a footballer.

The Senegalese international was second only to N’Golo Kante in terms of tackles and interceptions made in last season’s Premier League, which is why the 27-year-old earned a move from relegated Aston Villa last summer.

And he has now overtaken Kante on top of the tackles made list this term, making 112 to Kante’s 101 so far this season, and although he was far from his best against Liverpool at the weekend, Gueye has been a key part of Koeman’s midfield this season.

His desire to cover every blade of grass and retain possession under intense pressure sees him just get the nod ahead of United’s Ander Herrera, who also has been outstanding this season.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Both sides have quality in the attacking third of the pitch, but it’s difficult to keep out a man who has made a huge difference to this United side since returning to the fold in the autumn – Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian international made just one Premier League start in the first four months of the season (which itself lasted 45 minutes), and manager Mourinho was widely criticised for leaving such a quality player out of his starting line-up.

However, the Portuguese’s decision to give the 28-year-old more time to adapt to English football has paid dividends as he has since scored seven goals and laid on five assists in all competitions for the Red Devils.

Teammate Paul Pogba would probably have made this side, but looks set to miss the game on Tuesday thus can’t be selected, while although the likes of Ross Barkley and Kevin Mirallas are excellent attackers, they are not as good as Mkhitaryan, which is why he gets a place in this side.

Romelu Lukaku

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been sensational for United and is set to return from a three-match ban against the Toffees on Tuesday.

But it’s difficult to look past the Premier League’s top goal-scorer Romelu Lukaku for the leading role in this team.

The 23-year-old has scored 21 goals in 29 league games this term to help Koeman’s men to seventh place in the table, and with a genuine shot of securing European football next term.

The Belgian international has directly contributed to 27 of Everton’s 52 league goals this season to demonstrate his absolute significance to the team, and given that he has incredible pace and the physical strength to match, he is the all round forward that gives defenders nightmares.

Lukaku may not have been at his best against Liverpool on Saturday, but given his season as a whole, and the improvements he is making as a striker every week, he gets a place in this team.
