Courtney Sweetman-Kirk scored her eighth goal of the Women’s Super League 2 Spring Series as Doncaster Belles beat local rivals Sheffield 2-0 in a fiercely contested derby.

The striker, who missed much of 2016 due to a badly broken leg, has now scored more goals during this campaign than the entire team managed in her absence last season.

Sweetman-Kirk opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, before Kirsty Hanson notched her first for the club after 68 minutes to wrap up the win.

“Kirsty Hanson was my player of the match,” Sweetman-Kirk told the WSL website afterwards.

“She’s been building but she’s put in a class ball for me and scored a great goal.

“We want to go out and win this series now. It was a relief in a way [to get the win] but in the same breath we were confident in our ability to get the three points.”

Belles are currently leading the league, but Durham Wildcats are keeping on the pressure at the top of the table.
