Tottenham Hotspur’s inconsistent run of form continued on Sunday as they were beaten 6-3 by Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Having defeated Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals in their previous outing, Spurs found themselves 3-1 down at half-time against the Reds.

Arne Slot’s side were than 5-1 ahead, before the hosts pulled two back to threaten, briefly at least, to stage an unlikely comeback.

The visitors added a sixth goal late on courtesy of Luis Diaz, though, meaning the Merseyside outfit sit four points clear at the top of the table at Christmas.

Spurs, meanwhile, occupy 11th place and manager Ange Postecoglou will be desperate to see his side return to winning ways when they face high-flying Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.

In the meantime, it appears that the North London side are hoping to lure a former Premier League defender back to England.

As per Football Insider, Tottenham are plotting a January move to sign central defender Ben Godfrey from Italian side Atalanta.

Godfrey could make a quick return to the Premier League

The 26-year-old departed Everton to join Atalanta over the summer, ending a four-year stay on Merseyside.

Godfrey’s time in Italy hasn’t gone to plan so far, though, with the Englishman having not played in Serie A since making a substitute appearance on the opening weekend of the season.

He has played just five times across all competitions so far, but is yet to start a single match.

With that in mind, the report suggests that Spurs are hoping to land the versatile defender on a loan deal for the remainder of the current campaign.

Godfrey is able to play as a centre-back or full-back, and he could therefore be useful in appeasing postecoglou’s defensive injury crisis.

First choice centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Van have both missed plenty of action in recent months due to injury, while Ben Davies has also had spells on the sidelines.
