Struggling Premier League champions Liverpool will hope to return to winning when they host Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Reds were beaten 3-0 by Nottingham Forest on Saturday and have now lost six of their last seven matches in the competition.

In Europe Arne Slot’s side have fared better, though, sitting eighth in the 36-team table having won three of their four games in the competition so far.

Now, it has emerged that Liverpool are putting serious plans in place for the upcoming January transfer window as they look to salvage their disastrous season.

As reported by CaughtOffside, the Reds are intent on adding a defender to Slot’s squad during the mid-season window, and they have drawn up a shortlist of targets.

Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi – who came close to joining Liverpool over the summer – is said to be the frontrunner in the Reds’ race to sign a centre-back.

The England international is in the final year of his current contract with the Eagles, and is set to depart Selhurst Park next year.

Guehi has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders in recent seasons, as well as becoming an important player for England.

Among Liverpool’s other possible targets are Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck, and Benfica star Antonio Silva, the report claims.

Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio and Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano are also said to be possible targets for the Merseyside outfit, with the latter set to be out of contract at the end of the season.

Liverpool’s desire to sign a central defender comes amid uncertainty surrounding the future of Ibrahima Konate, who is set to be out of contract next summer.
