Tottenham host Premier League leaders Chelsea on Wednesday night (8pm kick-off) as the Blues look to become the first side to win 14 successive league games in a single season.

Antonio Conte’s side have won 13 games on the spin since their 3-0 defeat at Arsenal back on September 24, with the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, and Spurs all coming unstuck by the Blues in recent months.

However, Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham have won their last four league games and have yet to taste defeat at White Hart Lane this season, having won seven of their nine home matches this term.

Spurs comfortably swept aside Watford 4-1 on New Year’s Day to kick-off 2017, and they’ll go into Wednesday’s encounter hoping to be the first side to beat Conte’s men since the Italian switched to a back three.

Nonetheless, no side has picked up more points on the road this season than Chelsea, with their tally of 22 points one better than title rivals City and Liverpool.

The Blues could become the first side to win 14 games in a row in one season by picking up the three points in North London on Wednesday, yet Spurs will feel confident of ending one of the best winning streaks in the Premier League era.

In what is likely to be a fascinating battle at White Hart Lane, here are the THREE key battles which could determine the outcome on Wednesday night…

Diego Costa vs Toby Alderweireld

Arguably the best striker in the Premier League against the best defender, Diego Costa’s battle with Spurs’ Toby Alderweireld will go some way to determining the outcome tomorrow night.

The Chelsea striker has scored 14 goals in just 18 league games this season, and netted on his return from suspension in the 4-2 victory over Stoke on New Year’s Eve.

The Premier League’s top-scorer and most in-form forward is going to cause a Spurs defence, which has conceded just five goals at home this season, several problems but in Alderweireld, they have the man to keep Costa quiet.

The Belgian international returned to the starting eleven in the win over Watford on New Year’s Day and, although he hasn’t been at his absolute best in recent weeks, he started the season well, and looks set to be reunited with central defensive partner Jan Vertonghen against the Blues.

Strong in the air, authoritative, and with a great anticipation of the game, Alderweireld has all the qualities to frustrate Costa and minimise his influence.

Whoever has that slight edge on Wednesday could swing the game in their side’s favour.

Eden Hazard vs Kyle Walker

Chelsea have won 13 games on the trot heading to White Hart Lane, and the form of Eden Hazard has been a massive part of their sensational run.

The Belgian international, who scored just four goals in the entirety of last season’s Premier League, has already netted nine times for the Blues this season, and has also laid on a couple of assists, including the set-up for Willian’s opening goal in the win over Stoke on New Year’s Eve.

Hazard’s pace, trickery, and supreme confidence is going to provide a stern test for Spurs’ Kyle Walker on Wednesday, but the England defender has hugely improved his defensive capabilities in recent times.

The 26-year-old is comfortably his country’s number one choice right-back at present, and has been a key part of the Tottenham defence which has conceded just 14 times this season – he has started all but one league game thus far.

Also, it will be interesting to see how much attacking licence Walker is given against Chelsea, such is Hazard’s quality and the Blues’ utilisation of wing-backs, but more importantly for Spurs, Walker has the pace and know-how to frustrate Hazard and keep him quiet at White Hart Lane.

Harry Kane vs David Luiz

Harry Kane looks to be getting his mojo back after three goals in his last two league games.

And he’ll come up against the most improved defender in the Premier League in the form of David Luiz on Wednesday.

The Brazilian international has been a revelation since returning to Stamford Bridge in the summer, and has taken the newer central role of the back three in his stride over the opening half of the campaign.

Luiz is a much better defender now and is less likely to take any risks in his own half, yet he’ll come up against one of the toughest tests in the Premier League in Kane on Wednesday.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner hasn’t quite hit the heights of that campaign, but he has still netted ten goals in just 14 starts this season, with only Sergio Aguero (104) and Diego Costa (114) averaging less minutes per goal than the Englishman (118).

How well Luiz marshals Kane and prevents him linking-up with the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen will be crucial on Wednesday if Chelsea are to register a record-breaking 14th successive win.
