Short took over Sunderland in 2009

After taking control in 2009, Ellis Short has received a mixed reception at Sunderland. He has provided investment in the transfer market for players such as Darren Bent and Fabio Borini to join for fairly high fees. However, his consistent record at appointing the wrong manager, and getting involved in the footballing side often leaves Black Cats fans angered. Since 2011, Short has sacked five managers, highlighting his mistakes in appointing a boss capable of building a dynasty at the club. However, new manager Sam Allardyce believes Short has the best interests of the club at heart, stating that upon their first meeting, the American said: “We spent three hours talking about all aspects of football and he wants this club to be successful.”
