The Tottenham front four that could have been if they landed this deal

Tottenham missed the chance to close the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea after only managing a 0-0 draw at struggling Sunderland on Tuesday night.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men would have been hoping to get back to winning ways after drawing 2-2 with Manchester City last time out, and certainly would’ve fancied their chances against David Moyes’ men, who had lost four of their preceding five league matches.

Nonetheless, the Black Cats produced a resolute and spirited performance to prevent the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, and Christian Eriksen from continuing their good form, but it meant that, coupled with Chelsea’s draw at Liverpool, Spurs missed the opportunity to cut the gap between them and the Blues to seven points.

However, Arsenal’s defeat at home to Watford meant that they did at least move up to second in the Premier League table, although that nine-point gap to Chelsea is surely too big a margin to come back from with 15 games to go.

Tuesday also coincided with the closing of the transfer window, with many feeling that Spurs needed to bring in some reinforcements to avoid petering out in the title race, like that did last season.

Yet, despite being linked to many players, Spurs were one of several Premier League clubs that didn’t act, so here is what their FRONT FOUR could have looked like had they landed one key deal last month…

Christian Eriksen

Spurs have been in sensational form in the last few months, and that appears to have coincided with Christian Eriksen’s own return to form.

The Danish international contributed to just five goals in his first 17 appearances of the season, of which only three were in the Premier League, but his goal in the 2-1 defeat at Chelsea in November has instigated an excellent run of form.

The 24-year-old has scored five goals and laid on six assists in his last 12 games for Tottenham, and has helped them go from top four outsiders to title contenders.

Although they had an off-day against Sunderland on Tuesday, Spurs have been brilliant in recent months, and a lot of that has been down to Eriksen’s upturn in form.

Dele Alli

Like Eriksen, Dele Alli had a slow start to his second full season of Premier League football, but he soon got back to last season’s high standards.

The England international has already surpassed last term’s tally of ten league goals this season, and that is down to a run of eight goals in his last six appearances, including braces against Southampton, Watford, and Chelsea over the festive period.

For Alli to have already beaten his tally of ten from last term, given how excellent he was for Tottenham last season, is mightily impressive, and you sense that there are plenty more match-winning goals and performances to come from the 20-year-old.

Isco

Tottenham were heavily linked with a move for Real Madrid playmaker Isco in the first half of the season, yet they weren’t able to secure a deal for the Spaniard in January.

The 24-year-old has struggled to force his way into Zinedine Zidane’s first team at the Bernabeu, making just nine starts from their 19 La Liga matches, and only playing 67 minutes of football in their Champions League group stage campaign.

Despite this, it’s been clear that Isco still has loads to offer, given that he has netted four goals and laid on three assists in a restricted amount of appearances this season, and that it was he who changed the game when Spain came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with England back in November.

Thus, his situation at Madrid attracted a lot of interest from around Europe, but it was Tottenham who appeared to be at the front of queue in a bid to land the attacker.

Isco would have been great for Spurs, as he could have played anywhere across the advanced midfield positions, or potentially slotted in alongside Victor Wanyama in the deep-lying role.

Although he didn’t move in January, if Isco sees first team opportunities hard to come by in the second half of the campaign, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see Spurs reignite their interest in the summer.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane has once again been Tottenham’s go-to man this season, with many of his 13 Premier League goals securing much-needed points for Pochettino’s men.

The England international missed a sizable chunk of the campaign due to injury, yet has really found his form in the last six weeks, netting six goals in his last six league appearances, including a hat-trick in the 4-0 demolition of West Brom.

And, even when he doesn’t score, the 23-year-old has turned creator with an assist in the 4-1 win over Watford on New Year’s Day, as well as a deft lay-off to allow Son Heung-min to equalise against Manchester City a few weeks ago.

Kane is absolutely essential to Spurs, given their lack of other top-quality forwards, so keeping him fit and fresh will be crucial for Tottenham in their title charge over the coming months.
