These 2 defenders would be perfect for Everton in January

Everton have been knocked out of the FA Cup after losing 2-1 to Premier League champions Leicester City last Saturday.

The Toffees took the lead thanks to Romelu Lukaku; however a brace from Ahmed Musa means that the Foxes will face a trip to Derby County in the fourth round.

Ronald Koeman’s side can now focus solely on the Premier League. The Toffees face Manchester City at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon. Everton are currently seventh in the league, but they are nine points behind sixth placed Manchester United.

Despite signing Ashley Williams in the summer, the People’s Club have only kept six clean sheets in all competitions this season.

Young defender John Stones left last summer and it appears that they have struggled without him.

As the season is approaching the business end, Koeman’s men will be aiming to try and break into the top six of the table. To do this they will need to add some more defensive depth to their squad in January.

Shoot! looks at two defenders that Everton should sign in this month’s transfer window…

Michael Keane

The young Burnley centre-back is already showing signs of just what he is capable of.

Keane has started all 20 of Burnley’s Premier League fixtures this season. He’s kept four clean sheets during that time with two of them coming against Liverpool and his former club Manchester United.

His form this season has been recognised by his national side. Keane earned his first England call-up in October, but failed to appear in either of the two World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia.

According to whoscored.com, Keane has kept made more interceptions and blocks per game than Everton centre-backs Williams, Phil Jagielka and Ramiro Funes Mori this season.

He has also let fewer players dribble past him per game than the Toffees trio.

Keane only has 18 months left on his contract so he could be available at a cut priced fee. He is a young player who is only getting better, so he would be a worthy investment for Koeman’s side.

Branislav Ivanovic

The 32-year-old Serbian’s Chelsea contract expires at the end of this season.

Ivanovic has won everything possible at Chelsea and he even scored the winner in their 2013 Europa League success.

The Serbian has been very much out of favour at Stamford Bridge this season. He is versatile and is accomplished at both right-back and centre-back.

Should Seamus Coleman get injured or sold, Ivanovic would make superb cover at right-back.

The veteran still has a good couple of seasons left at the high end of the Premier League and he would be very cheap given his short contract.
