Manchester United have a two-goal lead in their EFL Cup semi-final tie against Hull City. Their 2-0 home victory against The Tigers on Tuesday evening means that they are within touching distance of the final of the competition.

Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini both scored in the second-half at Old Trafford. The second leg takes place on January 26.

Jose Mourinho’s side now turn their attentions back to the Premier League. They face rivals Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. They currently an unbeaten record spanning 14 matches long in all competitions.

Mourinho’s men are currently sixth in the Premier League table, three points shy of the Champions League spots.

Despite United’s fantastic string of results, they are struggling in their defensive options. Eric Bailly is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations and will not return to the first-team until February. Meanwhile, Marcos Rojo is also currently injured.

With their current defensive issues, Mourinho may look to buy some more defenders in this window.

Shoot! looks at two defenders Manchester United should sign in this month’s transfer window…

Seamus Coleman

With Antonio Valencia playing as a make shift full-back, United are lacking natural right-backs.

They only have youth product Timothy Fosu-Mensah as a recognised right-back in their squad and this needs to be addressed.

Coleman is one of the best right-backs in the league and he has been linked with a move to Old Trafford on numerous occasions in the past.

The Irishman has been at Everton since 2009 and is one of the longest serving players currently in the first-team squad.

Coleman would be a great acquisition for Mourinho and he could be just what the Red Devils need to return to Champions League football next season.

Jose Fonte

The Southampton captain has already told the club that he wants to leave in this window.

United seem to be lacking experience in their defence. Fonte was part of the winning Portugal side that captured European Championship glory last summer.

Fonte has featured 19 times for the Saints in all competitions this season, keeping nine clean sheets in the process.

The 33-year-old still has a good couple of seasons left in him and his experience could benefit both the defence of the side and the whole squad.

Fonte would seriously challenge for first-team places, his age and his request to leave would also make him available at a cheap price.
