These 2 defenders would be perfect for Tottenham in January

Tottenham are through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after a convincing 2-0 win over Championship side Aston Villa.

Goals from Ben Davies and Heung-Min Son mean that they will face Wycombe Wanderers at White Hart Lane in the next stage of the competition.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will now switch their focus back to the Premier League. Their next fixture in the league is at home to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. A win would move them up to second in the league as long as Liverpool fail to pick up three points on Sunday.

Spurs currently have the best defensive record. However, recently Pochettino has been starting to play with three centre-backs. This formation has been used occasionally so far this season, but it is likely that the Lilywhites will refer to this set-up on a regular basis.

If they’re to stay with a ‘three at the back’ system, then Pochettino should look to add some more defensive options to his squad.

Shoot! looks at two defenders that Tottenham should sign in this month’s transfer window…

Ricardo Pereira

The Nice full-back has had a superb season so far in Ligue 1. The Portuguese defender Pereira is currently on a two-year loan deal from FC Porto which ends at the end of the season.

The defender has been in scintillating form this season thus far. According to whoscored.com, Pereira has the highest average match rating of any player in the league this campaign.

The 23-year-old has featured 21 times for the French side in all competitions and has kept eight clean sheets along the way.

Pereira is a very versatile player. He naturally plays at right-back; but he is also highly capable of playing at right midfield or left-back.

He is a fast, attacking minded full-back meaning that he would very much suit the right wing-back role.

Pochettino does have Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier currently in his squad, but Pereira is more likely to suit the role than Trippier.

He is also capable of challenging Walker for a starting place in the side as they both play with a similar style.

Jose Fonte

The Southampton captain has already told the club that he wants to leave in this window.

Spurs already have a good centre-back pairing in Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, but Kevin Wimmer does not match them in terms of quality.

If the club are planning on reverting to three centre-backs, then they should look no further than Fonte.

Fonte was a key part of the winning Portugal side that captured European Championship glory last summer, so they would highly value his experience in the defence.

Fonte has featured 19 times for the Saints in all competitions this season, keeping nine clean sheets in the process.

The 33-year-old still has a good couple of seasons left in him and he would make a fantastic tutor for young defenders such as Cameron Carter-Vickers at White Hart Lane.

Fonte would seriously challenge for first-team places; his age and his request to leave would also make him available at a cheap price.
