These 2 Everton stars must leave in January for their own good

Everton bounced back from their disappointing FA Cup exit at the hands of Leicester with a thumping 4-0 win over Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ronald Koeman’s side would have been bitterly disappointed to get knocked out of the world’s oldest club competition last weekend, but they responded in the best way possible thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku, Kevin Mirallas, Tom Davies, and Ademola Lookman.

The victory, their second successive league win and third in their last four, means that they have consolidated seventh place in the Premier League ahead of West Brom, and have also reduced the gap between themselves and sixth place Manchester United to seven points.

Nonetheless, it looks unlikely that Koeman’s men will challenge for a top six spot this season, which made their FA Cup defeat even more frustrating, as it looked like their best realistic chance of getting into Europe next season.

However, there were signs against City that the Toffees were beginning to get back to their best, and a few more additions this month could seriously benefit the club for the remainder of the campaign.

Yet, bringing in a few additions usually means that some at the club have to make way, so here are TWO Everton stars that must leave the club for their own good…

James McCarthy

Morgan Schneiderlin’s arrival at Everton means that Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy could be on his way out of Goodison Park this month.

The 26-year-old has struggled for game time this season under Koeman, making just six Premier League starts and one League Cup appearance.

And, with Gareth Barry still pulling the strings in the middle, Idrissa Gueye set to return from the African Cup of Nations at the end of the month, and young starlet Tom Davies having announced himself on the scene, it’s not looking good for McCarthy’s long-term Everton prospects.

Sunderland have been heavily linked with the Irishman, with Lamina Kone set to go the other way, but North East rivals Newcastle and Scottish giants Celtic have also been reportedly keeping tabs on the midfielder’s situation at Goodison Park.

Clearly, McCarthy wouldn’t be short of suitors should he decide to leave Everton this month.

Arouna Kone

After three-and-a-half years at Everton and 59 appearances, it looks like striker Arouna Kone is set to leave Goodison Park.

The 33-year-old forward was brought to the club by former boss Roberto Martinez after the successful time they both had at Wigan, yet Kone’s best goal-scoring season came last time out, when he scored just five times in the Premier League for the Toffees.

And, with Romelu Lukaku the main man at Goodison Park, and Koeman placing faith in youngster Ademola Lookman, Kone’s chances to getting regular first team football are diminishing by the day.

He has appeared just six times in all competitions this season, and all six of which were from the substitute’s bench, totalling 76 minutes of football.

Championship duo QPR and Wolves have reportedly expressed an interest in the striker’s services, which would be a good move for both Everton and indeed Kone.
