These 2 Liverpool youngsters could be the next Marcus Rashford

It has been just over a year since Marcus Rashford announced himself on the big stage with four goals in the space of just three February days.

The teenager wasn’t even in Louis van Gaal’s team to face Midtjylland on February 25 2016, yet Anthony Martial’s injury in the warm-up opened the door for Rashford, who took his chance by netting twice to help United to an easy 5-1 victory.

And then, just three days later, van Gaal rewarded the English striker by giving him a Premier League start at home to Arsenal, and he once again delivered, scoring twice in three minutes to inspire the Red Devils to a 3-2 victory over Arsene Wenger’s men.

Since then, Rashford has had an unbelievable year, making and scoring on his debut for England against Australia in May 2016, and then just a month later being named in Roy Hodgson’s final 23-man squad for the European Championships.

Add in some crucial Premier League goals, most notably the winner in the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium last season, and Rashford has risen to the challenge, but where is the next young starlet going to come from, and potentially replicate Rashford’s meteoric rise?

Well, we took a look at Liverpool’s pool of young talent, and have identified TWO forwards who could be the next Rashford…

Yan Dhanda

Liverpool’s Yan Dhanda made the move to Anfield from West Brom at the age of 15, and has been in fine goal-scoring form for the Under-18s this season.

The 18-year-old, who has been capped four times by England at Under-17 level, has scored seven goals in 18 games for the Under-18s this term, including the winner against Everton on January 14 and indeed the third in their 3-3 draw with Manchester United back in November.

Dhanda, who can play as a number ten or down the left, has also appeared for the Under-23 side over the past few seasons, and he’s clearly an exciting young talent who could go on and become a star for Liverpool in the years to come.

Glen McAuley

There aren’t many strikers in the Under-18s league that are more prolific this season than Liverpool’s Glen McAuley.

The Republic of Ireland Under-17 international has netted 14 goals in just 20 games for the side this season, including the opener in their 3-1 victory over Wolves on February 18, their most recent fixture.

McAuley went on a run of ten goals in nine games between October and December (one of which the opener against Derby above), which included braces against West Brom, Blackburn, and Stoke to help them to fourth place in the Premier Academy League North division, level on points with Manchester United in third.

Scoring goals at the rate at which the 17-year-old does is mightily impressive, and surely indicative of a player who has a massive future in the game.
