These 2 Swansea City players must improve if they are to stay up

Swansea City are in complete disarray and are staring at a long, hard season if they do not improve their Premier League form.

Bob Bradley’s side have won just once since their opening day win at Burnley, and that was a thrilling 5-4 win over struggling Crystal Palace a few weeks back.

Other than that, there has not been much to cheer about for Swansea fans, and indeed manager Bradley, who replaced the sacked Francesco Guidolin at the start of October but has overseen just one win in seven games, in which time they have conceded 19 goals.

Their 5-0 hammering at Tottenham last weekend was their worse defeat of the season, and they now face a crucial match at home to fellow relegation zone occupier Sunderland at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

David Moyes’ men are just two points better off than Bradley’s basement side, but victory for the Swans could lift them out of the bottom three.

Clearly, Swansea haven’t been good enough in several areas this season, and there are some players who must improve if they are to avoid the drop.

Here are TWO of those players…

Wayne Routledge

English winger Wayne Routledge has started 11 times for Swansea in the Premier League this season, and has just one goal to show for his efforts.

The 31-year-old netted in their 3-1 defeat at Stoke in October, but has added very little to rest of Swansea’s attacking play.

His 805 minutes on the pitch have yielded no assists, and for an attacking player who likes to get wide, take defenders on and get the ball into the box, that’s not good enough, and he unsurprisingly lost his place in the starting line-up against Tottenham last time out.

The Swans cannot keep relying on the goals from Leroy Fer and Gylfi Sigurdsson to get them out of trouble, others must step up, one of which being Routledge.

Modou Barrow

We all know Modou Barrow has got great pace and can cause full-backs no end of problems – he proved that against Nacho Monreal at the Emirates in October – but it doesn’t always translate that into chances and goals.

The 24-year-old has yet to net a Premier League goal this season and, although he has two assists, too often his final ball isn’t good enough.

He is also wasteful in front of goal which, when you’re near the bottom, has to improve – he has had ten shots this season, but only two of them have hit the target.

There’s no surprise that when Barrow was at his blistering best and improved his final delivery, Swansea picked up three points in their 5-4 win over Crystal Palace a fortnight ago.

The forward is clearly good enough to make a difference in the final third, but we haven’t seen enough of it yet this season.
