These 3 Liverpool players are massively overrated – Agreed?

Liverpool have made a great start to the new Premier League season, their first full one under manager Jurgen Klopp.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss replaced Brendan Rodgers last October, and helped steer the club to the League Cup and Europa League final, although they went on to lose both. Despite this, the Reds could only muster an eighth place finish in the Premier League – their lowest since 2012.

Nevertheless, there is a lot of optimism around Anfield that Klopp can at least bring Champions League football back to Merseyside, although many also believe that they could challenge for the title.

The Reds are fourth, and just two points adrift of leaders Manchester City, going into their game against West Brom at Anfield on Saturday.

Nevertheless, there are a few players in the Liverpool squad that haven’t quite lived up to expectation during their spell at the club, and here are THREE of those players…

Emre Can

Emre Can came to the Premier League in 2014 amid high expectation following some decent performances for German side Bayer Leverkusen.

Although he appeared a number of times last season, his lack of playing time this time around suggests that he’s not actually as good as many people thought.

Can played pretty well for the Reds against Manchester United – his first Premier League start of the season – but didn’t do enough to suggest that he will displace Adam Lallana, Jordan Henderson, or Georginio Wijnaldum in the starting eleven.

At 22, there’s still time for Can to live up to early expectations, but he’ll have to improve if he is to become a regular feature in this Liverpool team.

Lucas

Lucas has had a decent career at Anfield since moving there in 2007 for £5 million, but it’s debatable whether he has really been a consistently top-level performer during his time at the club.

Regardless, the 29-year-old is just not as good as the other options Klopp currently has at his disposal, yet many people still highly rate the Brazilian international.

He has played over 200 times for the Reds, and won the League Cup in 2012, but he cannot contribute to the side in the same way that he has done over the last nine years.

Dejan Lovren

A contentious choice may be, as his form is steadily improving, but in the main, Dejan Lovren has not hit the same heights at Liverpool as he did at Southampton.

The Croatian international made a £20 million switch to Merseyside in 2014, which seemed like a steep figure for a player who had one good season in English football.

He made a number of errors in his first season at Anfield and, although he seems to have improved under Klopp, it still feels like the 27-year-old is short of the quality we all saw at Southampton.

However, this time last year, Adam Lallana would have been part of this overrated trio, yet he has improved no end to become a crucial member of the team, and a solid season for Lovren could see him go the same way.
