These 3 Manchester City stars are fighting for their futures at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City had the weekend off from Premier League action following their neighbours Manchester United’s participation in the League Cup final on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s side were due to host the Red Devils on Sunday, but Jose Mourinho’s side beat Southampton 3-2 in the final at Wembley to secure the trophy, which means that we’ll have to wait for the third Manchester derby of the campaign.

Nonetheless, City have the FA Cup on their mind this week when they host Championship high-flyers Huddersfield in a fifth round replay at the Etihad Stadium, having drawn 0-0 at the John Smith’s Stadium ten days ago.

Guardiola’s men will go into that clash in fine form having won four of their last five games in all competitions, including three in a row in the Premier League, and indeed that epic 5-3 success over Monaco in the Champions League a few weeks ago.

So, City clearly have a lot to play for between now and May, as do several of their players, with some not entirely certain whether they’ll be at the club come August.

Thus, here are THREE Man City players who are playing for their futures between now and May…

Bacary Sagna

Former Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna is one of several City players out of contract in the summer, and one who has a lot to prove to Guardiola over the coming months.

The defence has been City’s main problem so far this season, conceding 29 goals in the Premier League so far, and the full-backs at the club haven’t exactly done themselves justice this term.

However, of all of them, 34-year-old Sagna has arguably been the best, and was the one that adapted to Guardiola’s style of play particularly well at the start of the campaign.

Nonetheless, just 12 league starts and two others in the Champions League is indicative of a player coming to the end of his time at the Etihad Stadium, so he has a lot of work to do between now and May to convince the club of a new contract beyond the summer.

Yaya Toure

He was out in the wilderness for the few first months of the season, but Yaya Toure has been outstanding for City since his re-integration back into the side.

The 33-year-old made his first start of the campaign away at Crystal Palace on November 19, and scored twice in a man-of-the-match display to help City to a 2-1 victory at Selhurst Park.

Since then, the Ivorian has been a regular feature in Guardiola’s side, starting 12 times in the Premier League, and being included in their Champions League squad for the knockout stages, where he provided an assist in their 5-3 win over Monaco last week.

However, Toure’s contract expires in the summer and, although it looked for all the world that he would be off a few months ago, things have drastically changed and he is now an integral member of the City eleven.

Further impressive performances will surely see him extend his seven-year stay at the Etihad Stadium beyond the summer.

Sergio Aguero

Gabriel Jesus’ arrival last month immediately relegated Sergio Aguero to the substitute’s bench, and clearly demonstrated that he is not what Guardiola desires from his strikers.

The Argentine international has scored 113 goals in 169 Premier League matches for City since his arrival in England back in 2011, but hasn’t always been first choice this term, with the most obvious exclusion when they went to Barcelona in the Champions League in October, and Aguero was on the bench.

And when Jesus officially joined the club in January, the 28-year-old looked set for another spell on the bench when the Brazilian international netted three goals in his first three league games, although a metatarsal injury against Bournemouth his all but ended his season.

And this has opened the door for Aguero to prove to Guardiola that he can be the striker the Spaniard wants in his side.

He may not always press and lead from the front in terms of intensity and energy, yet that was exactly what Jesus did, and exactly what Guardiola wants – Aguero has the rest of the campaign to show that he is that sort of striker, otherwise City may consider selling the forward in the summer.
