These are Chelsea’s top 3 January signings

Chelsea missed out on the chance to secure a record-breaking 14th consecutive Premier League victory by losing 2-0 at Tottenham on Wednesday.

Antonio Conte’s men equalled Arsenal’s record of 13 wins by beating Stoke 4-2 on New Year’s Eve, but they were unable to get the three points at White Hart Lane as two Dele Alli headers clinched the win for Spurs.

Nonetheless, Conte’s side still have a healthy lead at the top of the Premier League, as they sit five points clear of second place Liverpool with 18 matches of the campaign left.

Chelsea have won 16 of their 20 league games so far, with victories over Manchester United, Tottenham, and Manchester City indicative of a side ready to regain the Premier League title from Leicester come May.

However, that defeat at White Hart Lane will act as warning sign to Conte and his men, and may even persuade the Chelsea boss to dip into the transfer window and secure further signings in a bid to keep the Blues at the top of the division.

Chelsea have had varying success in the winter window in the past, with some good buys mixed in with some bad ones, but here are their TOP THREE best January signings since the window was introduced in 2003…

Nicolas Anelka

French striker Nicolas Anelka had successful spells at Arsenal and Manchester City prior to sealing a move to Chelsea in January 2008, and he continued his fine form in English football at Stamford Bridge.

Although he only scored twice in the remainder of the 2007/08 campaign, the following season was the most prolific of his career as he netted 25 times in just 54 games to help the Blues win the FA Cup and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Anelka scored 15 times the season after to help the Blues win the Premier League and the FA Cup under Carlo Ancelotti, and the former French international then scored 16 goals in the 2010/11 campaign, his last full season in West London.

A £15 million signing, yet Chelsea certainly got their money’s worth.

Branislav Ivanovic

What a signing Branislav Ivanovic has turned out to be!

The Serbian international defender joined Chelsea back in January 2008 for £9 million, and has since then made 374 appearances for the Blues over a nine-year stay.

In that time, the 32-year-old has won two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and a Champions Legaue crown, and has also been recognised for his individual efforts at Stamford Bridge having twice been named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year, and also the Champions League Team of the Season for 2014/15.

Although his Chelsea looks to be coming to an end this season, Ivanovic has been a fantastic defender for the Blues, and is certainly one of their best January signings.

Nemanja Matic

Nemanja Matic spent two years at Chelsea between 2009 and 2011 before the club swapped him for Benfica’s David Luiz in January 2011.

Nevertheless, Jose Mourinho saw the Serbian international as the answer to his midfield conundrum at Stamford Bridge, and thus re-signed the 28-year-old in January 2014.

And, since then, Matic has been a revelation for the Blues, and was a chief reason for the their title success back in 2014/15 under Mourinho, as he played all but two Premier League games, and was rightly recognised for his excellence by being named in the PFA Team of the Year.

Last season wasn’t his greatest, but the same can be said for many Chelsea players, yet Matic looks back to his best under Antonio Conte this time around, and will likely be an integral part of their title challenge over the next few months.
