These are Liverpool’s top 3 January signings

Liverpool began the New Year with a disappointing 2-2 draw away at Premier League strugglers Sunderland on Monday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side led through Daniel Sturridge’s second league goal of the campaign, yet Jermain Defoe equalised from the spot for the hosts.

Sadio Mane looked set to secure the victory 18 minutes from time, yet he went from hero to zero as he handled in the box six minutes from the end, allowing Defoe to make it 2-2 with his second penalty of the game.

It means that the Reds reduced the gap on leaders Chelsea to five points, but Antonio Conte’s men could extend that lead to eight should they beat Tottenham on Wednesday.

Nonetheless, Klopp’s men remain second in the Premier League having won 13 of their opening 20 league games, yet could find themselves 11 points adrift by the time they play next in the league against Manchester United on January 16.

Like many managers, Klopp may look at reinforcing his side in the January transfer window to try and make up the gap on leaders Chelsea, and it wouldn’t be the first time that Liverpool have dipped into the winter window to improve their season.

While they have made some poor signings in Januarys gone by, they have also made some great ones, so here are their TOP THREE signings from the winter window over the last 14 years since its introduction…

Daniel Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge had fallen out of favour at Chelsea at the start of the 2012/13 season, and Brendan Rodgers saw an opportunity to bring the striker to Anfield.

And he did just that for £12 million in January 2013, and it’s turned out to be an excellent buy.

The England international went on to net 11 goals in just 16 games in his first six months at the club, and then scored 24 in his first full season in 2013/14.

Injury struggles have hampered his progress in recent times, but Sturridge is still a quality striker who can make the key difference in the final third.

He has only got five goals in 13 appearances this season, but Liverpool have certainly got their money’s worth from the 27-year-old over the last few years.

Philippe Coutinho

Inter Milan sold Philippe Coutinho to Liverpool for just £8.5 million back in January 2013, and his price has arguably quadrupled in his four years at Anfield.

The Brazilian international has made the Reds tick over the last few years, netting 35 goals in 158 games for the club since his debut against West Brom in February 2013.

Coutinho registered his most prolific season in English football last time out, scoring 12 times in 43 games for Liverpool, and started this season brilliantly as well before sustaining an injury against Sunderland back in November.

Twice a Fans Player of the Season, and twice a Players’ Player of the Season, it’s clear how much the Anfield faithful and indeed his fellow pros rate the 24-year-old – he’s certainly been one of their best January purchases.

Luis Suarez

A lot happened at Anfield on the final day of the 2011 January transfer window, with Fernando Torres leaving the club to move to Chelsea for £50 million, and Andy Carroll arriving from Newcastle for £35 million not long afterwards.

However, the best bit of business they did that day was signing Luis Suarez from Ajax for just £23 million, as he went on to lead the Liverpool line brilliantly over the course of the following few years.

The Uruguayan international netted 17 times in his first full season in England, but after that he took it up another level, scoring 30 times in just 44 games in 2012/13, and then 31 in just 37 matches the following season.

Unsurprisingly, Suarez’s sensational form attracted interest from top European clubs, with Barcelona securing his services in 2014 for £65 million – this all after the controversy Suarez created at the 2014 World Cup, which saw him banned from playing for four months after biting Giorgio Chiellini.

Nonetheless, a return of 82 goals in 133 games is incredible, and he’ll certainly go down as one of Liverpool’s best signings.
