These are Manchester City’s all time top 3 strikers – Agree?

Pep Guardiola’s first season in English football in charge of Manchester City has started reasonably well.

City are third in the Premier League having won seven of their opening 11 matches, including a 2-1 victory over neighbours Manchester United back in September.

However, it hasn’t all been plain sailing for Guardiola since he took over in the summer, as City did embark on a six-match losing streak between September and October, which included a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham and a 4-0 hammering away at Barcelona.

Nevertheless, Guardiola’s men have looked a lot better in recent weeks, and avenged their thrashing in the Nou Camp with a 3-1 over Luis Enrique’s side at the Etihad a few weeks ago to give them a great chance of qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League.

City will go into their game at Crystal Palace on Saturday looking to usurp leaders Liverpool at the top of division, given that they only trail the Merseyside club by two points.

Yet, with international football taking over the football calendar this week, we at Shoot! thought we’d take a look back at City’s history, and select the TOP THREE Man City strikers of all time…

3) Shaun Goater

Far from the most prolific goal-scorer Manchester City have ever had, Shaun Goater played an important part in helping the club bounce back from a difficult spell at the end of the 1990s.

City were relegated in the 1997/98 season to the third tier of English football, but Goater’s 95 goals in the succeeding five seasons help get the club back to the First Division, and then the Premier League in 2000/01, and then again in 2002/03.

Goater finished his City career with 103 goals from 212 appearances and, although many have scored more than him in the City blue, his goals were crucial in keeping City in and around the Premier League.

2) Francis Lee

Francis Lee is seventh on City’s all time goal-scorers list, with an impressive 148 goals in 330 appearances for the club.

He was top-scorer in four successive seasons between 1968 and 1972, and was part of the City team that won the First Division in 1968, and then the FA Cup in 1969.

City fans will also be delighted to know that, until Wayne Rooney’s goal in September 2013 against City, Lee held the record for the most goals in Manchester derbies with ten, a record that was also shared with City’s Joe Hayes.

1) Sergio Aguero

If Sergio Aguero keeps scoring goals like he has done for the last few years, he’ll be top of the all time goal-scorers list very soon.

The Argentine has found the net 150 times for City since moving to Eastlands in 2011, 110 of which have come in the Premier League, which leaves him 19th on the all time top-scorers list.

Although Aguero is sixth on the City goal-scorers list, his ability is unquestionable, and he is widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the modern game.

He has been City’s top-scorer in each of the last five seasons, and he is already top of the list again this time around, having netted 14 times in 15 games.

In a few seasons time, should he stay at City, it’s likely that he would have overtaken Eric Brook’s tally of 177.
