These are Manchester United’s top 3 January signings

Manchester United overcame West Ham 2-0 on Monday night to record a sixth successive win in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho’s men ended 2016 with five straight victories, and continued it that run into 2017 thanks to goals from Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a controversial evening at the London Stadium.

Nonetheless, it means that the Red Devils are now just two points behind fourth place Arsenal after their 3-3 draw at Bournemouth last night, and United’s recent run of excellent form will give them much confidence ahead of their meeting with Liverpool on January 15.

Mourinho’s men have won 11 of their 20 league matches this term, and have opened up a nine point lead over seventh place Everton as the top six begin to pull away from the pack.

However, United are still way behind leaders Chelsea and, if they have serious ambitions about challenging for the title in the second half of the season, they will need some reinforcements in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils have had varying success in the winter window since its introduction 14 years ago, but here are their TOP THREE January signings over the last decade and a half…

Patrice Evra

He may not have made the greatest start to his Manchester United career, but there’s no doubting how good a left-back Patrice Evra became in his time at Old Trafford.

The Frenchman moved to Manchester from Monaco in January 2006, and went on to become Sir Alex Ferguson’s first choice left-back for the next seven years, making 334 appearances under the Scotsman.

Evra remained part of the United squad when David Moyes took over in a bid to add to his five Premier League titles, three League Cups, and one Champions League crown, but he left Old Trafford in the summer of 2014 after a disappointing campaign, but still totalled 379 games for the club, netting ten times.

The 35-year-old moved to Juventus after leaving United, and remains on the books in Turin having renewed his contract last summer.

Nemanja Vidic

Little did Manchester United fans know that, in January 2006, Sir Alex Ferguson had bought a defender who would go on to become one of the best the Premier League has ever seen.

Serbian centre-back Nemanja Vidic made the move from Spartak Moscow to Old Trafford on January 5 2006 for £7 million, just a few days before United clinched a deal for Evra.

And what a bargain it was as the combative centre-half went on to win five Premier League titles, three League Cups, and a Champions League crown in his time in Manchester, totalling 300 appearances for the club before leaving in 2014.

Vidic developed a formidable partnership with Rio Ferdinand during his spell in the North West, and he’ll go down as one of the best centre-backs that has ever played in the Premier League.

Two times a Premier League Player of the Season and four times in the PFA Team of the Year tells you all you need to know about how highly Vidic was rated by the fans, his fellow pros, and opposing managers.

He retired from the game last year after seeing his contract with Inter Milan end in January.

Juan Mata

David Moyes spent £37 million on Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata in one of the more surprising moves of the 2014 January transfer window.

Nonetheless, the Red Devils were getting a Spaniard who twice won Player of the Season at Stamford Bridge, netting 33 times in 135 games for the Blues, and he’s done well since arriving at Old Trafford as well.

Mata has scored 32 goals in 127 appearances for United under Moyes, Louis van Gaal, and now Jose Mourinho, and continues to be one of the best and most influential midfielders in the Premier League.

Occasionally he plays out of his natural position, but Mata remains effective and a threat whenever he’s on the field, and will be a key player for the club over the next few seasons.
