These are the 3 worst January signings Chelsea ever made

Chelsea’s bid to set a new Premier League record of 14 successive wins in the same season ended with a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on Wednesday.

The Blues overcame a stubborn Stoke 4-2 at Stamford Bridge on New Year’s Eve to equal Arsenal’s 13 straight victories, but they were unable to keep their run going following two Dele Alli headers at White Hart Lane.

The result means that Antonio Conte’s side saw the gap between themselves and Liverpool drop to five points following the Reds’ 2-2 at Sunderland on Monday which, albeit still a healthy lead, makes the title race slightly more interesting going into the second half of the season.

The Blues have won 16 of their 20 league matches this term, but turn their attentions to the FA Cup this weekend when they entertain League One side Peterborough at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Chelsea’s defeat at Spurs may concern Conte going into the second half of the season, and he may feel that he needs to dip into the transfer market in a bid to keep his side at the top of the division.

The Blues are no strangers to the winter window, and have made some decent signings in it over the years, yet there have also been some poor ones, so here are their TOP THREE worst January signings since the window was introduced back in 2003…

Alexandre Pato

It what was a deemed a strange move anyway, Alexandre Pato didn’t have a great time of it at Chelsea last year.

The 27-year-old joined the Blues on loan in January from Brazilian side Corinthians in a bid to resurrect his career in Europe, yet he struggled to make much of an impact, appearing just twice for Guus Hiddink’s men, and netting once.

Since this disappointing spell in England, Pato has signed for La Liga side Villarreal, and has done well by netting six times in just 19 games for the Spanish outfit.

Juan Cuadrado

Juan Cuadrado excelled for Colombia in the 2014 World Cup, finishing the tournament with the joint-most assists alongside Germany’s Toni Kroos (4), and as a result he sealed a move to Chelsea in the January of 2015.

However, it hasn’t worked out at all for the 28-year-old, who is currently embarking on his second loan spell at Juventus since moving to Stamford Bridge.

The winger made 14 appearances in the second half of the 2014/15 season, but failed to net, and Cuadrado was eventually deemed a surplus to requirements by manager Jose Mourinho.

Thus, he has spent the last season and a half on loan at Serie A winners Juventus, where he has netted six times in 57 games for Massimiliano Allegri’s side.

Fernando Torres

Undoubtedly the worst of them all was the £50 million signing of Fernando Torres back in January 2011.

The Spanish international became the sixth most expensive player in history by signing for the Blues, this all after an excellent time at Liverpool where he scored 81 times in just 141 games for the Reds.

However, Torres really struggled to replicate that form and thus justify his price tag at Chelsea, netting just once in the second half of the 2010/11 campaign, and then only 11 times the season after.

He improved to score 22 goals in 64 games in 2012/13, but only eight of those were in the Premier League, before Mourinho allowed the striker to leave on loan to AC Milan in 2014.

Torres left Stamford Bridge last summer to seal a permanent return to Atletico Madrid, 18 months after joining the Spanish club on loan.
