These are the 3 worst January signings Tottenham ever made

Tottenham secured an excellent 2-0 victory over Premier League leaders Chelsea on Wednesday night to put themselves back into the title race.

Antonio Conte’s Blues were searching for a record-breaking 14th league win in a row, but they were undone by two fine Dele Alli headers as Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs secured a deserved victory.

It means that Tottenham move up to third in the table ahead of Manchester City and North London rivals Arsenal, and to within seven points of Chelsea.

Pochettino’s men have now won their last five league games, only Manchester United are on a better run, and their two goals against the Blues means that they are now the lowest conceders in the division, having shipped just 15 goals so far this season.

Spurs have won 12 of their 20 league games this term, but will turn their attentions to an FA Cup third round clash with an improving Aston Villa on Sunday in a bid to win the competition for the first time since 1991.

With Spurs back in the title race after their victory over Chelsea, Pochettino may look to bolster his squad in this month’s transfer window in a bid to sustain a challenge over the coming months.

Tottenham have dipped into the winter window regularly before to varying success, but here are their worst THREE January signings over the last decade or so…

Ricardo Rocha

Tottenham spent just over £3 million on Ricardo Rocha back in January 2007, and they’ll be glad that they didn’t pay any more for the defender given his poor spell at White Hart Lane.

The six-time Portuguese international was drafted in due to injury to captain Ledley King, and did solidly at times for the rest of the 2006/07 season, although was guilty for both of Arsenal’s goals in the Gunners’ League Cup victory over Spurs at the Emirates Stadium.

However, Rocha made just five appearances for the club in the 2007/08 campaign, before falling completely out of favour in the 2008/09 season, where he failed to play a single game for the club.

Unsurprisingly, Spurs cut their losses by selling the defender to Standard Liege in 2009, although he did return to England with Portsmouth a year later.

Gilberto

Gilberto was signed by Juande Ramos back in January 2008 in a window that also saw Jonathan Woodgate, Alan Hutton, and Chris Gunter arrive at White Hart Lane.

And, out of all four of them, Gilberto fared the worst.

The former Brazilian international made an error on his debut in March 2008 against PSV Eindhoven and, although he netted his one and only goal for the club against West Ham that season, that error was a sign of things to come.

The left-back played only three times for Spurs in the 2008/09 campaign and, in his only two starts of the season, he was substituted at half time on both occasions.

That pretty much tells you how his time at Tottenham went, and he signed for Brazilian outfit Cruziero in 2009 after having his Spurs contract ended.

Hossam Ghaly

Hossam Ghaly’s ill-fated three year spell at Tottenham was summed up by his moment of madness against Blackburn Rovers in 2007.

The former Egyptian international, who joined the club in January 2006, was brought off by manager Martin Jol despite only coming on at half time and, as a result, Ghaly didn’t take the news too well, as he took his shirt off and threw it down to the ground.

Unsurprisingly, this didn’t endear himself to the Tottenham supporters and, despite apologising for his actions, the midfielder didn’t feature again for the North London side, and was eventually sold to Al-Nassr in January 2009.
