Manchester United are reportedly ready to try and sign Sweden international defender Victor Lindelof in the new year, according to Sky Sports.

The Premier League side, who currently sit sixth in the English top-flight table following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at home to West Ham United, have been continually linked with a move for the Benfica centre-half.

The 22-year-old, who has 11 international caps for his country and featured for Sweden at Euro 2016 earlier this summer, has made 17 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese giants so far this season.

Lindelof, who is understood to be Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho’s number one defensive target ahead of the upcoming January transfer window, may be allowed to leave Benfica if they fail to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League next month.

However, they currently sit top of their group on eight points, level with Napoli and one point ahead of Besiktas, with their final group stage fixture against the Italian runners-up.

The report adds that Sweden star Lindelof would command a transfer fee in excess of £25m.
