This is Arsenal’s dream January defence including this key target

Arsene Wenger is looking to regain the Premier League title this season 12 years after he last won it, and his Arsenal side are going about it in the right way so far.

The Gunners have won eight of their opening 13 league games, with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool the only side to take all three points off of Wenger’s men so far this season.

Their tally of 28 points sees them fourth in the table, three points adrift of league leaders Chelsea, and they are well-placed to sustain a title challenge this time around given their current 19-match unbeaten run.

Arsenal haven’t lost in any competition since that 4-3 defeat to Liverpool on the opening weekend, and since then have won eight league games, three Champions League matches, and two League Cup ties.

Consequently, Wenger’s men qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League with two games to spare, although did their chances of winning the group no favours with a 2-2 draw at home to Paris Saint-Germain, and are through to the last eight of the League Cup, where they’ll take on Southampton on Wednesday.

It’s been an excellent start from the Gunners as they look to end a 12-year wait for the Premier League title, but some still feel that they could come up short as the season progresses.

One area of concern could be the back four, so here is the dream Arsenal defence, including one key January target…

Arsenal fans would have been overjoyed at the news that Hector Bellerin had signed a new long-term deal at the Emirates.

The Spanish international put pen to paper on a six-year deal last week, which all but ends any speculation of him moving to Manchester City in January.

The 23-year-old has developed into one of the Premier League’s best right-backs, and he’ll be a crucial member of the Gunners back four for many years to come.

There were a few question marks over Laurent Koscielny when he first moved to the Premier League, but he’s improved significantly to be Arsenal’s first choice centre-back.

The 31-year-old moved to North London in 2010 from French side Lorient, and it took him a while to adapt to the physicality of English football, but adapt he has.

The French international is now one of the better centre-backs in the league and, although he is still prone to the odd error, he more than makes up for them with goal-saving challenges and an organisation of the Gunners back four which hasn’t always been seen in recent years.

CB – Shkodran Mustafi

Wenger’s £35 million purchase of German World Cup winner Shkodran Mustafi looks to be money well spent.

The 24-year-old earned rave reviews at Sampdoria and Valencia prior to moving to the Emirates in the summer, and has been a regular feature in Joachim Low’s Germany side.

His developing partnership with Koscielny looks like the partnership Arsenal fans have been crying out for for years, although a few nervy displays in recent weeks means that, for some, the jury is still out on Mustafi.

Nevertheless, at 24, he has all the hallmarks of a top-quality centre-back.

Wenger needs to start thinking about a long-term replacement for left-back Nacho Monreal.

The 30-year-old has been a consistent performer for the Gunners since he nailed down the left-back spot, but there have been signs over the last few weeks that he’s being to struggle with the demands of the role.

The Spanish international was comfortably outplayed by Modou Barrow a few weeks ago, and gave away the penalty against Bournemouth on Sunday, a week after he was fortunate to get away with one against Manchester United.

Thus, Wenger may be tempted to reinforce that area, and he’d do much worse than look at Bayern Munich’s David Alaba.

The 24-year-old is a versatile defender who would give Wenger options all across the backline and into midfield, yet it’s at left-back where many believe he is one of the best in the business.

With United and Manchester City also reportedly interested, it is imperative that Wenger acts fast to bring his man to the Emirates in January.
