Liverpool temporarily regained top spot in the Premier League on Saturday following their 2-0 win over Sunderland.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were frustrated by the Black Cats for long periods at Anfield, but Divock Origi broke the deadlock with a fine finish fifteen minutes from time.

James Milner secured the three points in added time from the penalty spot, and it was a result which sent the Reds above Manchester City into top spot, albeit for only a few hours as Chelsea beat Tottenham in the late kick-off.

Nonetheless, it was a ninth league win of the season and fourth in five games for Liverpool, who only trail Antonio Conte’s Blues by a point after 13 games.

However, the league’s top-scorers may have to deal without playmaker Philippe Coutinho for a while, after he was stretchered off at Anfield yesterday with what looks like a serious ankle injury.

Yet, there is a huge sense of optimism around Anfield after the club’s sensational start to the campaign, which also includes a run to the League Cup quarter-finals where they will entertain Championship side Leeds on Tuesday.

Some still feel that Liverpool will come up short this season though, and Klopp could already be looking at how he can strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.

Thus, here is the dream Liverpool midfield, including one key January target…

Jordan Henderson

Jordan Henderson’s form this season for club and country has been nothing short of sensational.

The 26-year-old is full of confidence after being given a lease of life under Klopp, and the midfielder has repaid his manager’s faith with a string of excellent performances in the middle of the park.

Henderson was deservedly given the captain’s armband by Gareth Southgate for England’s game against Slovenia, and continues to be a key figure in the middle for both England and Liverpool.

His tireless energy and excellent ability to pick out a pass and press intensely has earned him rave reviews at Anfield, and he’ll be an integral member of that team for years to come.

Adam Lallana

It’s been clear from the opening 13 games of the season that Adam Lallana makes Liverpool tick.

The England international has been in superb form for club and country this season, and has netted three times for Liverpool and three times for his country in the opening months of the campaign.

However, it’s what he does for the Reds in the middle that makes him so important, as he is able to help out defensively when called upon, but also get up in support of the front line.

His work rate is phenomenal, and he has an excellent ability to unlock defences, something that was missing from them in their 0-0 draw away at Southampton last weekend.

Lallana is crucial to both Liverpool and England, and is turning into the top-quality player we all knew he could be at Southampton.

Mahmoud Dahoud

The third member of this midfield trio is Borussia Monchengladbach’s Mahmoud Dahoud, who shot to prominence in last season’s Bundesliga.

The 20-year-old midfielder made 41 appearances last season for the German outfit, and scored five times and assisted nine in helping the club finish fourth in the table and secure a place in the Champions League.

Unsurprisingly, the German Under-21 international has been attracting interest from several European clubs, with Manchester City, Tottenham, and Borussia Dortmund all linked with the talented midfielder.

However, Klopp appears to be the one leading the chase, with him reportedly set to bid £25 million for the German who would certainly bolster the Liverpool midfield both now and for the foreseeable future.
