All things considered, Chelsea didn’t have to worst transfer window, with new manager Antonio Conte managing to strengthen in all the areas in which he set out to upon his arrival in the Premier League, but how much better could it have been?
The Italian manager got two key signings confirmed early on in the window, landing deals for Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi and Premier League champion, N’Golo Kante from Marseille and Leicester, respectively.
Things weren’t quite as plain sailing from then in though, as the search for defensive reinforcements became the priority for the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
A search which lasted through until Deadline Day as the Blues saw numerous targets come and go before eventually landing deals for former Chelsea man, David Luiz and former Bolton and Sunderland full-back, Marcos Alonso.
Maybe not the ideal signings for the 2014/15 Premier League champions, but certainly crucial additions for the former Juventus manager who was desperate to solidify the back line before the deadline.
But fans can always dream, just what could have Conte’s line-up been if they had landed all the top targets that were linked to the Bridge? Well, take a look…
GK: Thibaut Courtois
There was no need for any concern from the incoming Antonio Conte here. The 24-year-old is one of the best ‘keepers in world football, and still has plenty of potential to be realised.
The Italian manager may have trepidations about his back four, but he need not worry about the Belgian between the sticks. Should the Blues get back to title winning form then the shot-stopper will be crucial in that.
RB: Stephan Lichtsteiner
The Juventus right-back is well known to the former Italy manager as he signed him for the Old Lady in his first year at the Juventus Stadium, and was mooted for a reunion with his old boss in the Premier League.
The Blues already have both Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic as senior full-back options, however, Conte may have lacked confidence in the pair after the calamity that was last season.
CB: Kalidou Koulibaly
The Napoli centre-half was a long standing target for the Blues as Conte looked to bolster his defensive ranks, however the Serie A side were adamant that he would be staying in Italy and out priced the London club.
The Senegalese international was considered as a long term replacement for Chelsea legend, John Terry, however the Stamford Bridge faithful will now have to settle for the returning David Luiz.
CB: John Stones
The now Man City defender may seem like a strange name to appear in this transfer dream team, however, the Italian manager was considering a move for the England international before he arrived in the country, and before Mr. Guardiola weighed in.
The former Everton man would have provided a long term solution to Conte’s defensive problem, whilst also offering the ability to play, confidently, with the ball at his feet.
LB: Marcos Alonso
The addition of a left-back was a strange one, especially one that cost £23m, considering that earlier in the summer Conte had decided to let current full-back Baba Rahman join Bundesliga side, Schalke, on a season-long loan.
The former Sunderland and Bolton man has a point to prove in the Premier League, and his new manager has his work cut out to turn him into the title winning defender he is hoping for.

This one isn’t a dream, it’s reality. The addition of the French international from Premier League champions, Leicester, was probably the signing of the summer. Not only that, due to his work rate and defensive capabilities, it makes the re-signing of David Luiz almost excusable.
Although his former teammates Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez drew most of the praise last season, the Foxes would have been nothing without the efforts of the 25-year-old, how didn’t put a foot out of place for the entire campaign.
CM: Blaise Matuidi
If you’ve already signed the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League, why not go out and get his compatriot and the best from France’s Ligue 1.
The addition of the Paris Saint Germain midfielder, who was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge earlier in the window, would have given those star attackers ahead of him the freedom to get back to their title winning best.
RW: Willian
The Brazilian international was the only shining light for the Chelsea fans in a season that will be confined to the history books as quickly as possible last time time out.
The winger genuinely seemed to be the only player on the pitch who actually cared for the entire campaign, and if he can show that once again, but in a team of like-minded players, it could be another great season for the 28-year-old.
AM: James Rodriguez
The Real Madrid star was strongly linked with a move away from the current champions of Europe this summer, with his first team opportunities supposedly dwindling at the Santiago Bernabeu, with the London club looking a very real possibility for a destination.
The Colombian international would, along with his dream XI teammates, strike fear into the heart of any Premier League defender and would more than likely lead the Blues to domestic glory.
LW: Eden Hazard
The Belgian boy wonder appeared to take somewhat of a sabbatical last season, before returning to his absolute best towards the end of the campaign and with his national side at the European Championships this summer.
With the likes of Kante and Matuidi behind him in this dream team the former Lille man will be handed the freedom to wreak havoc upon any opposition placed in front of him. But just who will be his partner in crime leading the line is this dream transfer XI?
ST: Romelu Lukaku
The Belgian international had been linked with a return to the Bridge all summer, with Everton’s drastic £75m valuation the only thing that appeared to stop the deal going through.
The former West Brom loanee could add real fire power to the dream side with the technical experts in Willian, James and Hazard in support of the powerful 23-year-old, a front line to be reckoned with.
