Aside from Deadline Day Tottenham went about their business in a rather quite manor, with deals for both Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen tied up very early on in the window.
However, a protracted saga to land Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and a late swoop for Everton-bound Moussa Sissoko dominated their Deadline Day dealings.
The additions made by manager Mauricio Pochettino over the window were maybe not quite what Spurs fans were expecting, with the North London side seeming acquiring a whole new bench without strengthening their starting eleven.
Many top-class talents were rumoured to be bound for White Hart Lane over the summer as last season’s third-placed Premier League side look to build for the most highly contested league campaign for years, as well as domestic cup and European fixtures to contest with.
Every fan wishes for a star-studded transfer window, however – unless you’re Man United with Mourinho at the helm – that rarely happens. We all like to dream though so, with that in mind, here is the side that Pochettino could have sent out week-in, week-out this season…
GK: Hugo Lloris
No change here! Despite the addition of Spanish ‘keeper, Pau Lopez on loan from Espanyol, no Spurs fan would put anyone in over their French shot-stopper.
If Pochettino’s side are to improve upon last season’s title challenge, whether that be domestically or on the continent, the then their captain will once again have to be on top form throughout.
RB: Kyle Walker
Once again, there is no need for a replacement here. The England international enjoyed a superb renaissance of a season last term, and will want to build on that once again.
The 26-year-old was one of the only Three Lions players that came away from the European Championships this summer without a significant dent in their reputations, and looks set to keep his role at White Hart Lane for a long time to come.
CB: Toby Alderweireld
The former Southampton man has formed a fearsome pairing with his compatriot, Jan Vertonghen, in the back line which looks set to continue for the foreseeable future.
Due to their solid combination, there was no need for new additions here over the summer, as Pochettino focused on issues further up the field, and rightly so.
CB: Jan Vertonghen
The other half of the perfect defensive pair. With his fellow Belgian alongside him Jan Vertonghen went from strength to strength last season and will want to so again.
Similar to his captain in between the sticks behind him, the 29-year-old and his partner in crime next to him will have to be firing on all cylinders throughout the season if Spurs stand any chance of competing at the top once again.
LB: Danny Rose
There is no change across the entire defensive setup in the summer’s dream team, and why would there be? Danny Rose completes what was the joint best back line last season, with only Man United matching the 35 goals conceded by Pochettino’s side.
Like his compatriot in the other full-back slot, the 26-year-old came away from the European Championships fairly unscathed in comparison to his teammates.
The psychological effect may still be the same, however, the left-back stepped up to the plate in a way no-one expected over the last term, it looks as if he will continue in that vein over the next nine months or so.
CM: Victor Wanyama
Here is where the changes begin! Bolstering the squad was the top priority for Maurico Pochettino this summer, with such a busy season ahead, and he turned to a powerful midfielder whom he knows well to add real steel to his side.
The former Southampton man may have a few disciplinary errors that need ironing out, that said after last season’s clash with Chelsea so does the entire squad, but on his day nothing will get past the Kenyan international, who has already chipped in with a winning goal this season.
CM: Morgan Schneiderlin
An rather surprising link which appeared on Deadline Day was a rumoured move from Pochettino to reunite the midfielder pair from his days on the South Coast.
The French international hasn’t enjoyed the best of times since leaving Southampton and would more than likely flourish once again in the heart of this dream team midfield, with his former manager and teammates around him.
RW: Wilfried Zaha
Another surprise rumour which emerged towards the end of the window was Pochettino’s chase for an addition winger began to look slightly desperate.
The Crystal Palace man was reportedly keen on the move North of the river, but was quickly and firmly informed that he would be going nowhere.
The former Man United man would have been a slight gamble as a big signing, however, given the Argentinian manager’s record with youngsters, could have gone on to be a masterstroke over the coming season.
AM: James Rodriguez
The Colombian star was heavily linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu over the summer, and White Hart Lane was one ground mooted as a potential destination, as the Spurs boss looked to add to his attacking armoury.
The 25-year-old, who has scored on 25 occasions and assisted 29 goals in his 81 appearances for the Galacticos, would really take the North London outfit to the next level both at home and abroad, and is the lynchpin of this transfer dream team.
LW: Isco
Another who was rumoured to be heading to Tottenham from the Champions League winners over the summer window, the 24-year-old, alongside his Real Madrid teammate, would add real European pedigree to Pochettino’s side.
The current midfield at White Hart Lane currently has some brilliant attacking options, with Dele Alli, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen all able to change games on their own, however, they need some depth and going into the toughest season for years they will want quality depth.
ST: Vincent Janssen
Rounding off the dream team is a man that will be plying his trade in North London for the coming seasons. The former AZ Alkmaar striker offers a more powerful outlet than Harry Kane and with the Englishman enduring his trademark slow start, Pochettino needs his new number nine to stand and deliver.
The 22-year-old bagged 27 goals in the Eredivisie last season, and although the Premier League offers a completely different challenge, if he can translate some of that form to his new club then the 2015/16 Premier League top scorer could be in for some real competition.
