This is the ultimate Manchester United and Tottenham combined XI

Manchester United host Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday as both sides look to make up ground on the top four in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho’s United have struggled to turn draws into wins this season, drawing six of their last eight league games, and their last four at Old Trafford.

Stoke, Burnley, Arsenal, and West Ham have all left the North West with a point in recent months, with United winless at home in the league since they thumped Leicester 4-1 on September 24.

Nonetheless, they won their last game at Old Trafford against West Ham in the League Cup last week, and go into Sunday’s clash off the back of a 2-0 win over Zorya in the Europa League on Thursday.

However, they’ll have to be at their best to beat Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham, who have lost just one game so far in the league, and have conceded the least of any side in the top-flight.

Spurs are six points better off than United in fifth having won seven and drawn six of their first 14 games, and they registered a morale-boosting 3-1 win over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday, albeit they failed to make it out of the group.

Pochettino’s men lost their last league away game at Chelsea, and they know that they’ll have to be at their best to get a positive result at an improving United this weekend.

With the build-up well underway, we at Shoot! have selected our ultimate combined XI from the current squads, and here are the ELEVEN players that make up our combined Man United and Tottenham team…

GK – David De Gea

Both teams have arguably the two best goalkeepers in the Premier League, so deciding between them is far from easy.

However, if you consider which one has won their side more points, you’d probably have to say United’s David De Gea just pips Hugo Lloris.

The Spanish international has for three successive years been their Player of the Season, which says quite a bit about his displays between the sticks at Old Trafford.

Spurs captain Lloris has been brilliant since arriving in England, but De Gea just gets the nod.

RB – Kyle Walker

Antonio Valencia has been particularly good for Manchester United down the right this season, but the more established full-back Kyle Walker gets the right-back berth in this side.

The England international has had an excellent few years, and has nailed down the number one spot ahead of Nathaniel Clyne in the Three Lions side.

The 26-year-old has improved defensively as well, but that hasn’t impacted on his attacking instinct, which is still a huge weapon for Spurs to have at their disposal.

Walker was the only England player who performed well at the Euros in the summer, and he deserves credit for a solid start to this campaign as well.

CB – Toby Alderweireld

Arguably the best defender in the Premier League last season, Toby Alderweireld has been sensational since his move to England back in 2014.

The Belgium international initially spent time at Southampton in the 2014/15 campaign, and was brilliant for the Saints in helping them to a seventh place finish under Ronald Koeman.

Nevertheless, he has got even better under Pochettino at White Hart Lane, and was the standout defender in their title challenge last season, in which Spurs finished with the joint-best defensive record in the league, alongside United.

Injury has disrupted his campaign this time around, but he’s nearing full fitness and Spurs fans will be thrilled to see him nearing a start.

CB – Jan Vertonghen

As much as Eric Bailly has been impressive since moving to Old Trafford, it’s difficult to leave out Alderweireld’s compatriot and central defensive partner Jan Vertonghen.

The 29-year-old struck up a formidable partnership and understanding with Alderweireld last season, and was a key part of the Spurs defence which conceded just 35 goals in the Premier League.

His injury at the end of last season was unfortunate, but Vertonghen has kept things solid this time around in Alderweireld’s absence.

The best centre-back partnership in the division? Undoubtedly.

LB – Danny Rose

Mourinho doesn’t appear to have settled on a left-back yet.

Matteo Darmian has occupied that berth in recent times, while Luke Shaw was there earlier in the season, and Daley Blind has also deputised there occasionally.

However, Pochettino has the luxury of being able to rely on Danny Rose at left-back who, like Walker, has made the England spot his own in recent months.

The 26-year-old has come a long way from the youngster that scored that sensational goal against Arsenal on his Premier League debut in 2010, and is now a dependable full-back who has improved defensively under Pochettino.

Like Walker, Rose can provide a serious attacking threat, and Spurs are often at their best when these two get wide – Rose is a certainty in this side at present.

CDM – Paul Pogba

£89 million man Paul Pogba appears to be adapting to the English game and improving with every match he plays.

The French international was sluggish in the first month or so since returning to Old Trafford in the summer, but has began to make more of an impact in the final third with two assists in his last three games.

Playing him here could also give him the licence to push forward a bit more, but it’s his domination of possession which would be invaluable in this side, especially in the central role.

CDM – Mousa Dembele

A central midfield pairing of Pogba and Mousa Dembele would be up there as one of the best in the division.

Belgium international Dembele can do everything asked of a midfielder – he can break up play, is strong in the tackle, retains the ball well under pressure, and produces explosive runs to get at Premier League defences.

On the ball, the 29-year-old is brilliant, and would complement Pogba’s more attack-minded approach by providing control of the middle.

It would be some partnership.

RW – Christian Eriksen

Both sides have struggled a bit creatively and going forward this season, but Christian Eriksen is beginning to hit some form for Tottenham.

The Danish international struggled to make an impact earlier in the season, and this was highlighted in Harry Kane’s absence, yet the 24-year-old has three goals and two assists in his last three games, including becoming the first person to score against Chelsea’s back three a fortnight ago.

United have struggled a bit out wide, with Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, and Anthony Martial not consistently performing at a high level, but Eriksen’s recent displays earn him a spot in this side.

CAM – Juan Mata

Juan Mata has arguably been United’s best player this season – this all after a summer of speculation following Mourinho’s arrival, and whether or not the Portuguese would sell him again.

However, the Spanish international has been excellent for the Red Devils, and has scored five goals in all competitions, including three in the Premier League.

It’s also his record against the top six sides which is impressive, as the Spaniard averages a goal or an assist every 148 minutes, which is better than the likes of Mesut Ozil (179), Eden Hazard (230), and Eriksen (337).

Unsurprisingly, it was Mata who scored the winner against Manchester City in the League Cup in October, and netted United’s goal in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal last month.

A big-game player who has been excellent for United this season, and just pips Dele Alli to the number ten spot.

LW – Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Mourinho may well have got the decision to exclude Henrikh Mkhitaryan from the squad in the first few months of the season right, based on his recent form.

The Armenian captain made his first United start against neighbours City back in September, but clearly struggled and was replaced at half-time as Mourinho’s men lost 2-1.

Nonetheless, the 27-year-old returned to the starting line-up against Feyenoord in the Europa League last month, and produced a man-of-the-match display at Old Trafford as the hosts won 4-0.

And further man-of-the-match performances have followed against West Ham in the League Cup and against Zorya on Thursday, in which time Mkhitaryan set up two and netted his first United goal.

His recent form has been excellent, and he could be the creative spark that Mourinho’s men have missed at times this season.

ST – Harry Kane

Photo: Mark Leech

Both Harry Kane and Zlatan Ibrahimović are in excellent form, but it’s difficult to look past the former after what he has done for Spurs in recent years.

The England international won the Golden Boot last season with 25 goals as Pochettino’s side went close in the title race, and he has started this season in a similar vein.

The 23-year-old netted his ninth of the campaign in their 3-1 win over CSKA Moscow in midweek, which means that he has scored seven goals in his six games since returning from injury.

Spurs struggled to score goals when Kane was injured, which indicates his significance to this side, and he just gets in ahead of Ibrahimović in this side.
