Three defenders to consider for FPL Gameweek 5 including Chelsea and Aston Villa stars

With four gameweeks of the Fantasy Premier League season out the way, it’s now vital that your team kicks on and starts climbing the rankings.

Defenders are crucial to picking up as many points as you can with those clean sheets all adding up at the end of the season.

At the other end, with so many attacking full-backs on show now there’s always a chance of a player in your backline registering an assist or even a goal.

Looking ahead to this next round of fixtures, many of the big teams are facing off against each other, which leaves space for a couple of picks from clubs outside of the ‘big six’.

Here’s who we feel you should consider putting in your team if you already haven’t…

Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa) – £4.6m

Aston Villa have made an impressive start to the season having won all of their three matches to date. In that time they’ve only conceded twice – both coming in the sensational 7-2 win over champions Liverpool last time out. The centre-back partnership of Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings have played a big part in Dean Smith’s side’s fast opening. Konsa, who we’ve opted for over Mings due to being £0.5m cheaper, has racked up 22 points in three matches due to two clean sheets and a goal. This makes him the fifth highest scoring defender to date and the least expensive out of those top-5. Next up is a tricky looking game at Leicester but with the Foxes having been beaten 3-0 at home by West Ham in their last match it could be another claret & blue day at the King Power.

George Baldock (Sheffield United) – £5.4m

Sheffield United were one of last season’s surprise packages but they have found the start of this more difficult. Although Chris Wilder’s side have lost their first four matches, they have only conceded six goals in that time. It’s that stat which makes us feel that you should select a Blades full-back in Gameweek 5. George Baldock has started all of this term’s fixtures to date, accumulating eight points, edging ahead of his fellow teammates due to his assist at Arsenal. Now with a leaky Fulham side – who have conceded 11 in their four matches – set to arrive at Bramall Lane there’s a chance of the ex-MK Dons man adding to his tally at both ends of the field.

Kurt Zouma (Chelsea) – £5m

After spending over £200million in the summer many would not have predicted that one of Chelsea’s better players in the opening games of the season would be Kurt Zouma. However, despite being in a backline which has conceded six times – including three at West Brom – the Frenchman has accumulated 22 points so far. Much of that is down to the fact he’s netted against Brighton and Crystal Palace, with the latter match also delivering a clean sheet. Now with a Southampton side which has scored just five times in as many matches in all competitions coming to Stamford Bridge, the Blues will be eyeing another shutout.
