Three reasons why Reading will knock Manchester United out of the FA Cup

Reading travel to Manchester United on Saturday afternoon (12:30pm kick off) looking to cause a classic FA Cup upset at Old Trafford.

Championship high flyers Reading will be aiming to emulate their 2015 FA Cup run, where they reached the semi-finals of the competition before being eliminated by eventual winners Arsenal.

The Royals will be full of confidence going into the lunchtime clash on Saturday as they currently sit in third position in the Championship table.

The second tiered side are currently managed by former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam. The 44-year-old Dutchman spent three seasons playing under Sir Alex Ferguson making over 125 appearances in the process.

The Red Devils are the current defending champions of the competition so if Reading can beat them, they can beat anyone.

Shoot! looks at THREE reasons why Reading will knock the 12 time FA Cup winners out in the third round.

Reading’s FA Cup form

The Berkshire side’s FA Cup form in recent seasons has been very commendable.

As well as their semi-final elimination in 2015, the Royals reached the quarter finals in last year’s competition.

In fact, Reading have reached the last eight of the FA Cup four times in the last seven seasons.

If any team are to cause a surprise in the cup this weekend, then Stam’s side are the team to do it.

Their ability to fight back

A lot of teams in modern day football do not show a lot of fight nor passion when they are losing.

However, Reading have proved that they are not a team to just give up. In their last league fixture, Jaap Stam’s side beat Bristol City 3-2 at Ashton Gate despite being two goals behind with less than 20 minutes remaining.

Big teams such as United can become lackadaisical when they are winning, so if they are tested by Reading’s passion Jose Mourinho’s men could easily crumble.

They may not have beaten their Premier League opposition since 1927, but all records must come to an end at some point.

Yann Kermogant

The 35-year-old French striker has been in a great run of form in his last two fixtures for the Royals.

Kermogant has notched three times in his last two matches against Norwich and Bristol City; winning man of the match in both fixtures.

The former Charlton and Bournemouth forward already has seven league goals this season and is currently Reading’s second top goalscorer in the Championship.

He also has the highest average match rating of any of Stam’s players in the league this campaign.

With Eric Bailly away on international duty and Mourinho set to field a rotated side, will Kermogant be stopped from adding to his recent form?
