Top 3 Chelsea players in 3-0 Champions League win vs Rennes

Chelsea extended their unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions with a comfortable 3-0 Champions League win against Rennes on Wednesday night.

The Blues’ third victory on the bounce not only kept them top of Group E, it also delivered a fifth clean sheet in a row.

Two penalties from Timo Werner and a Tammy Abraham strike took the London side on to seven points from their three Champions League games.

Now, with three matches to play, Frank Lampard knows just one more victory for his team will more or less seal qualification to the knockout phase.

Goalscorers, Werner and Abraham, impressed at Stamford Bridge, but were they amongst Chelsea’s best players on the night?

Here we select our top 3 Blues performers against Rennes…

3. N’Golo Kante

After a brilliant performance in the DM role against Burnley at the weekend, the inclusion of Jorginho meant the Frenchman was allowed more freedom to roam in this one. Despite a silly booking for kicking the ball away, the 29-year-old put in a dominant box-to-box display. The Rennes players simply couldn’t keep him under control.

2. Reece James

The full-back seems to be growing with confidence each game. James was again up and down the right flank all night at Stamford Bridge. Put in some dangerous crosses, setting up Tammy Abraham for his goal. Also helped his side keep a fifth clean sheet in a row. A very strong performance and one that will just add to the 20-year-old’s growing reputation.

1. Timo Werner

With two goals, our man of the night has to go to Timo Werner. The German, who was playing from the left hand side, twice converted from the penalty spot after winning the first himself. Was incredibly lively and worked hard for his side throughout. Chelsea’s new first-choice penalty taker has now scored four goals in his last three matches.
