Top 3: Premier League players of the day including Chelsea and Spurs stars

The Premier League returned following the last international break of 2020 with four matches on Saturday.

Chelsea went top for a few hours after beating Newcastle 2-0 in the early kick-off, before Tottenham replaced the Blues following an impressive 2-0 win over Manchester City.

In the late match, Manchester United West Bromwich Albion, while Brighton ended a six-game winless run with a 2-1 victory at Aston Villa.

Across the four games, a whole host of individuals put in impressive displays for their teams.

But who were the standout stars of the day?

Here we select our top-3 Premier League players from Saturday’s fixtures…

3. N’Golo Kante (Chelsea)

The Frenchman has been in fine form of late and was Chelsea’s standout player in their 2-0 win at Newcastle United. Captain for the victory at St James’ Park, the 29-year-old ran the game from a deep midfield role. As usual the ex-Leicester star was all over the park and, as well as helping to break up play, also started many of his side’s attacks. It’s quite ridiculous to think that there were rumours that the London club could’ve been willing to let Kante leave in the last transfer window.

2. Danny Welbeck (Brighton)

It’s been a tough few years for Danny Welbeck with injuries stagnating what had been an impressive career to date. After suffering relegation with Watford last term, Brighton handed the 42-time England international a Premier League lifeline last month. After looking sharp in his first two appearances, the 30-year-old continued a promising start to his Seagulls career in the 2-1 win at Aston Villa. As well as netting his first Brighton goal with a well taken finish, the ex-Manchester United and Arsenal striker was a great outlet for his team and even carried on with cramp.

1. Harry Kane (Tottenham)

Despite not scoring, the Tottenham star put in yet another standout display for his side in the big 2-0 win over Manchester City. Now playing in more of a number 10 role than a number 9, the England captain’s positioning, range of passing and work rate was too much for City. Switched the play brilliantly on numerous occasions and registered his ninth Premier League assist of the campaign when he set-up Giovani Lo Celso’s goal.
