Top 3 reasons why Liverpool won’t retain their Premier League title this season.

Liverpool have been used to dominating opposition in the Premier League for the last two seasons, winning the title last campaign.

However, this term Jurgen Klopp’s side have struggled to overpower their opponents, which showed again this afternoon with a disappointing draw on the road at Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Reds’ main rivals in recent years have been Manchester City, who have also yet to hit the ground running this season. But other top teams such as Tottenham Hotspur are becoming worthy title contenders.

After a difficult start to the season, we name three reasons why this may not be the year for Klopp and his team…

Jose Mourinho

Not many would have predicted it, but Liverpool’s old rival Jose Mourinho seems to be back to his best guiding his Tottenham team to the top of the table. With the squad he has assembled and the way his team are playing, Spurs have to be considered serious title contenders, even at this early stage of the season.

Injuries

It’s been well documented that Liverpool are suffering with big injuries to key players. Club captain and talisman Virgil van Dijk is likely to miss the whole season. But adding to Klopp’s woes are the loss of Joe Gomez, Thiago, Trent Alexander-Arnold and many other key players. Klopp has been very vocal about his distain for the fixture congestion his side are facing and the consequences it having on his squad of players.

High-intensity football

What has made Liverpool unstoppable for the last 12 months has been their intensity in football matches. The running power and speed of his players and their ability to press teams for 90 minutes has set them aside from their domestic competition. However, with the fixtures coming thick and fast due to the shorter season, Liverpool just cannot keep the same intensity they used to and are suffering because of it.
