Top 3 standout Chelsea players in the 2020/21 season so far

After an inconsistent start to the season, Chelsea have put together an eight match unbeaten run in all competitions.

The Blues, who have won their last four matches on the bounce, have huge expectation on them this term after spending over £200million on new players in the summer.

A 4-1 victory over Sheffield United in their most recent game took Frank Lampard’s side to a tally of 15 points.

Frank Lampard will be happy with his side’s season so far.

With over a fifth of the league season and 13 matches played in all competitions, we feel now is a good time to judge how individuals have performed to date.

So, after much debate, here are our top-3 standout Chelsea players in the 2020/21 season… so far.

3. Reece James

Club captain Cesar Azpilicueta has been Chelsea’s main man in the backline over recent years, performing to a high level on a consistent basis. That in itself tells you how well Reece James has done to not only get games, but to get ahead of the Spaniard as Frank Lampard’s current first-choice right-back. The England international has started 6/8 Premier League and 2/3 Champions League matches so far. James’ comfort on the ball and ability to deliver a cross has not gone unnoticed and, as well as his all round play, he’s also registered one goal and two assists.

2. Kurt Zouma

With the arrival of Thiago Silva in the summer, Chelsea’s other centre-backs knew they’d have to raise their game in order to nail down a regular starting spot. It seems – 13 games in – that Kurt Zouma has won that battle to sit top of the pecking order. The Frenchman, who signed for the Blues back in 2014, has started seven of the eight Premier League matches to date and all three Champions League games. Not only has the 26-year-old put in a number of strong displays in the backline, he’s also notched three goals so far.

1. Timo Werner

When Chelsea splashed out on Timo Werner in the summer they were expecting goals in return. Despite not netting in his first four Premier League games, the German was a lively in each one with his pace causing opposition defenders a number of problems. It was only a matter of time until the goals would come and that they have. Since scoring in the EFL Cup defeat at Spurs, the 24-year-old has netted another seven times to take his tally to eight in 12 matches across all competitions. The good news for Chelsea fans is that we’re sure the goal-getting striker will just keep getting better and better.
