Chairman Dejphon Chansiri stamped his authority in the English game by making his first key decision, appointing Carlos Carvalhal as Sheffield Wednesday manager after the sacking of Stuart Gray back in June 2015.

Although the Wednesday faithful were reluctant to see Gray depart, Carvalhal’s arrival brought a new and fresh approach to Hillsborough.

In his playing days, Portuguese national Carvalhal was a central defender and made over 250 league appearances in the Portuguese Primeira Liga over a sixteen-year period between 1983 and 1999.

Carvalhal also claimed nine international caps for the Portuguese Under-21 side between 1985 and 1987.

The Owls boss, now 51 years of age, began his management regime in the 1998-99 season with Portuguese outfit Espinho.

In fact, Sheffield Wednesday is Carvalhal’s sixteenth club in total as boss, having previously taken charge of Braga, Sporting Lisbon and Turkish giants Besiktas, to name a few.

With two years fast approaching since Carlos’ arrival at Hillsborough, Shoot!’s Louis Shackshaft takes a look back at Carvalhal’s top five victories since taking charge as The Owls boss…

5. Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Bristol City (08/08/15)

Carlos Carvalhal’s first game in control of the Owls saw Sheffield Wednesday host Bristol City at Hillsborough.

In a game where new arrivals Jack Hunt, Alex Lopez, Marco Matias and Lucas Joao all made their debuts for Wednesday, expectations from the fans was on the rise.

The hosts ran out 2-0 winners that day courtesy of a headed goal by Tom Lees on 60 minutes, before now forgotten man Lewis McGugan slotted home a volley ten minutes later to rub salt in the wounds of a newly promoted Bristol City side.

Ever since this victory, Carvalhal’s men have continued to impress at Hillsborough and a clean sheet is still a common theme.

Home form played a huge part in Wednesday’s road to Wembley as they went on to reach the play-off final last term.

4. Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Cardiff City (30/04/16)

Another major test for Carvalhal was this tough encounter against an in-form Cardiff City.

Wednesday needed to win this clash to seal a play-off position.

The Bluebirds, who were sat seventh in the league, would have gained ground on The Owls if they were to cause an upset at Hillsborough that day.

A Gary Hooper (Pictured) brace, plus a Lee Peltier own goal saw Wednesday run out 3-0 winners in front of almost 32,000 spectators.

The win had Hillsborough rocking and was the start of the play-off journey.

3. Newcastle United 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday (26/12/16)

Match winner Glenn Loovens.

Having already previously beaten Newcastle United 1-0 in the preceding season’s League Cup, no Owls fan could have asked for a better belated Christmas present than travelling home with all three points after defeating the league leaders on Boxing Day.

Not only did Sheffield Wednesday come away with the points, they ran out deserved winners.

Carvalhal implemented a successful game plan to accompany an impressive display by The Owls squad.

This win also reminded the top five in the league that Sheffield Wednesday are still serious contenders for promotion as the second-half of the campaign began.

Success against The Magpies once again suggested that Carvalhal’s troops are a match for anybody.

2. Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Arsenal (27/10/15)

This convincing victory for Sheffield Wednesday raised the eyebrows of many across the nation.

A quality goal from Ross Wallace and additional goals from Lucas Joao and Sam Hutchinson completed the perfect night for The Owls in front of a jam-packed Hillsborough.

Carlos Carvalhal’s profile as a manager took a giant leap having already surpassed Newcastle United in the League Cup with Arsenal unaware they were next in the firing line.

This impressive, hard fought display also distinguished Wednesday as a force in the Championship who could match any opposition on their day.

This display also gave the Wednesday squad added belief as league performances reached the next level.

1. Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Brighton (13/05/16)

Carlos Carvalhal ensured Sheffield Wednesday executed a perfect display of football in this play-off semi final first leg.

Over 34,000 Wednesday fans were bouncing from start to finish under the sunset of S6.

A Ross Wallace thunderbolt on the stroke of half-time gave The Owls a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

A precise hit from Kieran Lee in the 73rd minute was enough to seal the 2-0 Wednesday win.

In the return leg, Sheffield Wednesday confirmed a play-off final fixture after a 3-1 aggregate victory over Brighton, despite constant heavy pressure.

It was safe to say that Carvalhal had overachieved in his first season as Wednesday boss and has now become one of the country’s most recognisable managers.
