‘Der Bomber’, as he was nicknamed, was one of the most prolific strikers football has ever seen, as his goalscoring record shows.

He scored 735 goals over his career, including 68 goals in just 62 international appearances, as well an astonishing 398 goals in 453 games for Bayern Munich.

He also claimed the Ballon d’Or in 1970, as well as the Golden Shoe in the same year and again in 1972.

He held the all-time World Cup goalscoring record with 14 goals until 2006 when Ronaldo (the Brazilian one this time) beat it.
