Top 5: Premier League Players of the Week

The second week of the 2020/21 Premier League season delivered goals, goals, goals.

In all, a record-breaking 44 goals were scored across the 10 matches, beating the previous leading total set back in February 2011.

Tottenham Hotspur and Everton scored five, Leicester City and Leeds United scored four, while Brighton and Crystal Palace struck three times in their victories.

Many players stood out for their respective clubs, but we’ve selected who we feel were the five standout stars across matchday 2…

Son Heung-Min

Plenty of question marks surrounded Spurs following their opening day 1-0 defeat to Everton. However, they responded with a ruthless performance at Southampton as Son Heung-Min netted four times in a 5-2 win. The South Korea international struck home his first on the stroke of half-time before adding a second half hat-trick. If Jose Mourinho is to bring silverware to the club then he will need his 28-year-old star to hit this kind of form on a regular basis.

Harry Kane

There’s probably not been many times when a player gets a goal and four assists but doesn’t win Man of the Match. Well that was the case for Harry Kane at St Mary’s after he set up all of Son Heung-Min’s goals against the Saints. The England captain’s passing accuracy was absolutely pinpoint and, in typical fashion, he got on the scoresheet himself with eight minutes left on the clock.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin followed up his match winning header against Spurs on matchday 1 with a first career hat-trick in the 5-2 win over West Brom at Goodison Park. The Englishman’s backheeled first preceded a sliding finish and a header which downed the Baggies. If the 23-year-old carries on this prolific form, which has seen him score 12 times in 23 matches since Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival, then he will put himself right in the frame for an England call-up.

Wilfried Zaha

Wilfried Zaha once again showed why he’s Palace’s star man with a match winning performance against former club, Manchester United at Old Trafford. The Ivory Coast forward was not only a constant threat with his pace and dribbling ability, but also netted a brace in one of the weekend’s most surprising results. A retaken penalty saw the 27-year-old put the Eagles 2-0 up on 74 minutes, before striking a lovely effort five minutes from time to seal the three points. Once again, Zaha’s performances will be pivotal to how Roy Hodgson’s side get on this term.

Sadio Mane

Following a quiet game by his standards in the 4-3 win over Leeds, Sadio Mane showed why he’s regarded as one of the best forwards in the Premier League with both goals in Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Chelsea. The Senegal international first headed in Roberto Firmino’s cross on 50 minutes before capitalising on a Kepa Arrizabalaga mistake to secure the champions a big three points.
