Top 5: Premier League players of the weekend including Arsenal and Liverpool stars

The Premier League returned following the last international break of 2020 with eight matches across the weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur finished top on a weekend in which they defeated Man City 2-0 but have champions Liverpool behind on only goal difference following a 3-0 victory over Leicester City.

Chelsea also had a brief spell at the summit after beating Newcastle 2-0 in the early Saturday kick-off, while there were also wins for Brighton, West Ham, Everton and Manchester United.

Across the eight games, a bunch of individuals put in impressive displays for their teams.

But who were the standout stars??

Here we select our top-5 Premier League players from the weeeknd’s fixtures…

5. Bernd Leno (Arsenal)

The German saved Arsenal in their match at Elland Road with a string of top-class saves. Leno brilliantly denied Patrick Bamford and Stuart Dallas, plus made numerous other stops. His handling was assured throughout as he helped the Gunners snatch a point and only their third Premier League clean sheet of the season.

4. Diogo Jota (Liverpool)

To say Diogo Jota has made a good start to his Liverpool career would be an understatement. The Portuguese attacker has flourished since his move to Anfield from Wolves and continued to show his class in the 3-0 win over Leicester. Lively in his movement and clever on the ball, the 23-year-old caused the Foxes numerous problems. Four minutes before half time, Jota then netted his seventh Reds goals in his last six games with a fine header.

3. Danny Welbeck (Brighton)

A career which started so promising at Manchester United has unfortunately been hampered by injury in recent seasons. However, Danny Welbeck proved he still certainly has what it takes to cut it in the Premier League with his display in Brighton’s much needed 2-1 win at Aston Villa. The 42-time England international netted his first Seagulls goal in the first half and, despite suffering cramp, ran himself into the ground for his team until the very end.

2. Harry Kane (Tottenham)

Tottenham’s star striker has taken up a slightly deeper role of late but it has made him by no means any less influential. Although he didn’t get on the scoresheet in this one, Harry Kane put in a top performance as Spurs defeated Manchester City 2-0 to put them top of the table on Saturday night. The England captain’s work rate, link-up and passing was a joy to watch. Also managed to register his ninth Premier League assist of the campaign when he set-up Giovani Lo Celso in the second half.

1. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)

Everton’s number nine continued his red-hot start to the season with another top-class display in his side’s 3-2 win against Fulham. As well as netting his ninth and 10th Premier League goals of the campaign – making him the outright leading marksman – the England international also helped the Toffees by holding the ball and linking up well with his teammates. If Calvert-Lewin can keep on firing then maybe Carlo Ancelotti’s side could compete to finish in a European spot.
