Top 5: Premier League players of the weekend including Chelsea and Manchester United stars

Matchweek 8 of the 2020/21 Premier League season once again produced some great goals and interesting results as three different clubs topped the table.

In the match of the weekend’, champions Liverpool draw 1-1 with rivals Man City at the Etihad, meaning the Reds move from first to third heading into the international break.

Above them now sit Tottenham Hotspur, who won 1-0 at West Brom, and new leaders Leicester City, who defeated Wolves by the same scoreline.

Harry Kane scored a late winner for Spurs.

Southampton also had a brief stint at the summit over Friday night after their victory over Newcastle United.

But – across the latest round of top-flight fixtures – who have been the standout individuals?

Here we select our top-5 Premier League players of the weekend…

Che Adams (Southampton)

Saints fans would’ve been worried at the news that star striker Danny Ings is set for spell on the sidelines. However, strike partner Che Adams stepped up to the plate on Friday night with another impressive performance in the 2-0 win over Newcastle. Moments after being denied by Karl Darlow, the 24-year-old opened the scoring on seven minutes with a well taken volley. As well as netting his third in four matches, Adams worked his socks off and can be proud of his performance.

Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)

Manchester United’s star playmaker was their main man once again as the Red Devils recorded an important 3-1 win at Everton. In what was one of their more impressive performances of the season, the Red Devils came from a goal down with their Portuguese midfielder very much the catalyst. Equalised with a superb header before finding the back of the net again with a teasing cross. Worked hard for his side and put himself about before also registering an assist when he set up Edinson Cavani’s first United goal late on.

Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace)

Crystal Palace won the race to sign highly-rated forward Eberechi Eze from QPR and, if you watched his display against Leeds, it’s easy to see why the Eagles weren’t the only interested club. The 22-year-old assisted Scott Dann’s opener with a fantastic corner before following that with his first Palace goal by converting a brilliant free-kick. With the talent Eze has, we’re sure we’ll see even more dazzling Premier League performances from him across the rest of the season.

Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea)

Two Premier League starts and two inclusions in our top 5 players of the week for Hakim Ziyech. The Morocco international is already showing why Chelsea wanted to bring him in from Ajax. After impressing at Burnley last week, the 27-year-old was arguably even better in the 4-1 win over Sheffield United. Set up Mateo Kovacic in the build-up to Tammy Abraham’s equaliser before assisting goals for both Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva.

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Villa’s club-record signing continued to show why they gave Brentford the cash for his services with another eye-catching performance. Ollie Watkins scored a brace in the 3-0 win at Arsenal with two cool finishes to take his tally to six in the Premier League.
