Top 5: Premier League players of the weekend including Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs stars

The Premier League returned with a bang for matchweek 5 following the latest international break.

Eight matches at the weekend delivered 27 goals as the majority of defences once again struggled to keep attackers at bay.

But with so many players putting in eye-catching performances over the weekend, who stood out?

Here we’ve selected who we feel were the five standout stars across the Saturday and Sunday fixtures.

Marcus Rashford

Manchester United needed to respond after a dismal display against Spurs last time out and, despite going a goal down early against Newcastle, they responded in style. A big part of the Red Devils’ eventual 4-1 win was Marcus Rashford. Playing through the middle as a centre-forward, the England international’s pace and movement was a threat all evening. As well as winning the penalty, which Bruno Fernandes surprisingly missed, the 22-year-old scored and assisted strikes for Fernandes and Wan-Bissaka. A fantastic display from the exciting forward.

Timo Werner

Chelsea’s summer signing from RB Leipzig had impressed in his opening four Premier League matches but had failed to score his first top-flight goal in this country. But the Germany international did get off the mark against Southampton as he netted two first half goals in a thrilling 3-3 draw. After running at the Saints back-four to then convert his first, the goal-getter controlled the ball, flicked it over the ‘keeper and headed home to cooly convert his second. With his finishing ability and calmness in the box, there’s no doubt these will be the first of many in the Premier League for the Blues star.

Michael Keane

Everton have started the season in fine form, staying unbeaten and top of the table following a 2-2 draw against champions Liverpool in the Merseyside derby. The Toffees are experiencing a real resurgence under Carlo Ancelotti and one of the players benefitting from that is Michael Keane. It has taken time for the England international to rediscover the form he showed at Burnley in a blue shirt, but he has started this season incredibly well. Despite the two conceded against Liverpool, Keane marshalled the back-four well and headed home his side’s first goal from a corner.

Harry Kane

Spurs looked to have picked up where they left off after their big 6-1 win at Manchester United before the international as they raced into a 3-0 lead against West Ham United. Captain Harry Kane was the catalyst for that fast start once more as he assisted Son Heung-min’s opener and then scored twice himself. The England skipper later hit the post as he came close to a hat-trick in a match in which three late Hammers goals shocked the hosts in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Ross Barkley

Ever since breaking through as a wonderkid at Everton, it’s been an up and down career for Ross Barkley. However, now on loan at Aston Villa, he could be at the right club and in the right system to shine in the Premier League. Although he wasn’t as consistent in this performance as he was in the big 7-2 win over Liverpool, the attacking midfielder grew as the game went on and was rewarded when his 25-yard strike found the bottom corner. The strike secured the Villans all three points and maintained their 100% start to the campaign.
