Top 5: Premier League players of the weekend including Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle stars

Premier League matchweek 6 again delivered some great goals and surprise results to continue the unpredictability of the 2020/21 season.

No club now holds a 100% record after Aston Villa and Everton both suffered their first defeats of the campaign to Leeds and Southampton respectively.

But with many players putting in eye-catching performances across the weekend’s eight matches, who stood out?

Here we’ve selected who we feel were the five standout stars…

Patrick Bamford (Leeds United)

Leeds continued their impressive start on their return to the top-flight with a 3-0 win at an Aston Villa side who had won their first four matches. The Whites’ hero on Friday night was Patrick Bamford. Many questioned whether the 27-year-old could cut it in the Premier League but he again proved the doubters wrong with a hat-trick at Villa Park. The striker notched all three goals in the second half to take him to six for the campaign to date.

Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace)

Roy Hodgson’s Eagles won their third Premier League match of the campaign with a 2-1 victory at Fulham. Once again Palace’s main man was Wilfried Zaha as he assisted his side’s first goal before scoring the second on 63 minutes. The forward has not netted five goals in his last six league games for the Selhurst Park outfit which is as many as in his previous 41 combined.

Diogo Jota (Liverpool)

After impressing as a substitute in the win at Ajax in midweek, Diogo Jota was handed a start alongside Liverpool’s fearsome front-three against Sheffield United. And the Portugal international repaid the faith shown in him by Jurgen Klopp with the winning goal to secure the champions a 2-1 comeback win. Th ex-Wolves attacker’s only shot at goal may have been the header from Sadio Mane’s cross, but it was the decisive blow which ended the Reds’ run of two league games without a win.

Jacob Murphy (Newcastle United)

Maybe not a name you would’ve predicted to be on this list before the weekend, but Jacob Murphy impressed for Newcastle in his first Premier League start since December 2018. The winger wasn’t afraid to get on the ball throughout and topped off his display with a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Wolves with a clever free-kick.

James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

After losing their opening two Premier League matches, Southampton have hit back and are now on a four-game unbeaten run. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side secured their third win of the campaign with an impressive 2-0 win over table toppers Everton at St Mary’s. Captain James Ward-Prowse put in an eye-catching display against the Toffees. The 25-year-old scored Saints’ first goal with an arrow of strike past Jordan Pickford and was fantastic in possession throughout.
