Top 5: Premier League sides that can catch the ‘Top Six’

With just a third of the Premier League season remaining, the competition is really starting to hot up and it looks likely that Chelsea’s Antonio Conte will be winning the league title in his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have amassed 60 points from the 25 league matches this season and are currently eight points clear of Manchester City, who are in second place.

Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are third to sixth respectively and are all within four points of Pep Guardiola’s side, with it coming down to a few good performances or a few bad results making the difference in the final order of these clubs come the end of the season.

There is, of course, one major contrast between a fourth place finish and a fifth place finish in the Premier League as it will determine who will be playing Champions League and Europa League football next season.

However, whilst these sides currently occupy the top six places in the top-flight, there are several teams still within touching distance who could all still mount a late charge towards the top of the table.

Here are five of the teams that might still be in with a shot of catching one of the current top six Premier League sides…

Burnley

Clarets boss Sean Dyche.

Burnley continue to impress under Sean Dyche since returning to the top-flight at the first attempt last year and their continued success has been largely down to their home form at Turf Moor.

They have won nine of their 14 games at home and after being defeated by Swansea City on the opening day of the season, The Clarets have only lost on home turf to Premier League title contenders Arsenal and Manchester City.

In fact, out of the 30 points that they have won this season, 29 have come in the familiar surroundings of their stadium, which is almost 97 per cent of their overall points tally –  their only other point coming at Old Trafford back in October.

They find themselves mid-table at this stage of the season, but have a fairly easy run-in compared to other teams in the division.

Should they be able to continue their amazing home form and use this to build on their away from, the Lancashire outfit will be hopeful that they can challenge for their best-ever Premier League finish.

West Ham United

Despite moving to a new stadium, flirting with the relegation zone and losing their star playmaker in Dimitri Payet, West Ham are still in with a possible chance of earning themselves a Europa League or Champions League spot this season.

Currently in tenth place on 32 points, Slaven Bilic’s side are definitely within reach of those clubs above them and they could certainly be considered as having already over-achieved during this campaign given their large number of issues both on and off the field.

Their next five games will be crucial, and apart from facing the league leaders Chelsea, the East London outfit will face Watford, AFC Bournemouth, Leicester City and Hull City.

All of these games should be viewed as winnable and if they manage to achieve this, their surge up the table will continue.

The Hammers have lost just three times in their last ten games, winning six games since the start of December and will be hoping to match, or improve upon, last season’s seventh place finish.

Southampton

Super signing: Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini.

Southampton are one of three clubs, along with Burnley and Watford, who find themselves mid-table on 30 points.

After improving their league position from eighth, to seventh, and then to sixth over the course of the last three seasons, Claude Puel’s men have had a fairly average season, but have managed to reach the final of the EFL Cup.

Whilst this could detract from the likelihood of being able to secure a top six finish, something that will add to their chances of a strong end to the campaign is the addition of £14m signing Manolo Gabbiadini.

In his first two games for The Saints, the former Napoli striker has scored three goals and will provide a great boost to Southampton’s misfiring frontline.

It is somewhat remarkable that the Italian international has already scored over 10 per cent of the team’s goals in the top-flight this season, despite spending just 163 minutes on the pitch.

The striker could prove to be a great acquisition as Southampton try to match their last three impressive seasons.

West Brom

Defender Gareth McAuley.

Tony Pulis joined West Brom back in January 2015 and after enjoying good spells with Stoke City and Crystal Palace, the 59-year-old has been working his magic with The Baggies.

After two steady seasons, finishing 13th and 14th respectively, he is guiding the side from The Hawthorns back to the form that they were enjoying between 2009 and 2013.

They currently sit eighth in the Premier League table on 37 points and will be hoping that they can eclipse their best points total in the top-flight (49), which they achieved during the 2012-13 campaign under former manager Steve Clarke.

Since January, West Brom have consolidated their position in the league and will be hoping that they can squeeze past Everton into seventh place – or higher – during the 13 fixtures remaining.

Pulis’ side are unbeaten in four league games and, with their next two matches at home to Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, they will certainly be looking to close the gap and fight it out for a possible Europa League spot.

Everton

Toffees forward Romelu Lukaku.

Everton probably have the best chance of catching the top six, as they are currently only six points off of Manchester United and are unbeaten in their last eight league games.

This is a spell that has seen the Merseyside team put six goals past Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth and convincingly dispatch of Premier League champions Leicester City 2-0, Claude Puel’s Southampton 3-0 and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 4-0.

In fact, since the turn of this year, Ronald Koeman’s team top the Premier League form table and are one of only five European clubs (including Manchester United, Barcelona, Napoli and Bayern Munich) to be on an unbeaten run lasting more than eight games in the league.

So far this season, the assumption has been that Everton’s main battle is going to be for seventh place – but their sights should be set higher.

Having been knocked out of both the EFL Cup and FA Cup, The Toffees should be pushing towards their first top six finish since Roberto Martinez guided them to a fifth place finish in 2013-14.
